fixing a slim PS2

I've seen plenty of guides on adjusting the laser and suchlike on the regular PS2 disc assembly, but I can't find any for the slim PS2... anyone know where I can find one? Anyone ever fixed (or even just opened) their slim PS2 before?

I bought an old PS2 from someone here on AT and just opened it up and started playing around with it to see what stuff did. After a while I found a guide on the internet and just bought that, it was pretty helpful, but I lost it. Paid $13 for it, too :|

Thanks. Yea I just bought this off Ebay for £6 plus shipping, knowing that it boots but does not read discs - worst case I replace the whole laser assembly for £20 and I still payed like half what a fully working second hand slim costs.

Anyone else?

I think your best bet is to try to keep adjusting the laser, and if you can't get it working within like 30 minutes, just order a new laser, preferrably with the solder point still in tact (means it was never used).

I got the PS2 I got from AT working in about 45 minutes or so. Just had to plug some ribbons back in, adjust the laser height/azimuth, and I was done 🙂

That's the thing - I don't know how to do this on a slim PS2, there is no wheel or lever that I can see.

OK, I found a small screw that moves a lever which shifts the little lens holding thing (not the moving laser assembly, inside the middle of that under a metal cover) left and right. The lens thing also moves (bounces almost) up and down, but only if I nudge it with a screwdriver, there is no up/down control I can see.

The lens is not perfectly clear either, the middle is darker than the outside, does this indicate damage?

Now that I have the lens out and can see both sides of it, it is not really discolored, it was just the dark surface I was seeing through it... duh. I'll clean it anyway.

I see two screws on the underside of the laser assembly, they do not hold anything in place. Could they be pots for controlling laser power? Left is less resistance yes?

Got your PM! Anyone else feel free to contact me for PS2 questions. I've modded quite a few and could probably help out, depending on the problem.
