This hd3870 was acquired from a felllow AT trader earlier this year, has served me well up until very recently. I am not sure what exactly triggered it, could have been the driver update through windows update which I dont usually go for, or messing around with catalyst settings to get the secondary output to the TV working properly.
Since I have relegated some of my games to other computers, I have a narrow set of test apps.
- 2D anything seems to be working just fine. That includes x264/h264/xvid/dvix video played in d3d vmr mode.
- Oblivion greets me with big white squares for the banner and the cursor. Gets even funkier once I get past this screen.
- Freespace2 halts in an error never seen before while loading a new campaign. When viewing ship info, the models are shown in few colored dots.
- Mabinogi runs but has severe banding and textures are smered as if lod bias is set way high.
I downloaded the ATi's cat 8.8, uninstalled the old one using the setup program that came with the newer Cat. That didn't seem to do the trick, so I tried all sorts of combinations of FSAA, aniso and cat AI settings at no avail.
The thing is, I am supposed to be upgrading to HD4850 and made a verbal agreement with my friend to sell my HD3870 to him. Obviously, I can't and won't be selling a non-functioning card. Any thoughts?
