In my infinite wisdom, I did not uninstall my nvidia drivers from XP before I removed and sold my 6600GT. Now when I plug in my 6800 Ultra or my old FX5600, I get instant BSOD in windows, even in safe mode and VGA mode. How can I fix this without an OS re-install? Can it be done throught the recovery console? If so, how?

I'm dying!

If you can get to the boot menu - can you try a selective boot, where you say YES or NO to each driver loading up at boot. May have to do that a few times to get the right combination.

If you get into the recovery console - you would be able to disable certain services - you might be able to do some good, or might not.
Don't think you can play with drivers though.

Could try renaming some files - that are to do with your vga card - With some luck, you might get the machine confused enough to let you load up [allbeit with a bunch of errors]

Got frustrated and unplugged it for a half hour. Then I was able to get into windows long enought to set a chkdsk /r to run at next reboot. HDD had a bunch of errors which got repaired. Wasn't the graphics drivers after all, although I did reinstall them anyway. Dunno why some files were corrupt. All seems well now.

Got lucky.
