FIXED WTF? Windows XP Domain Name Not Found FIXED

FIXED. It was Tenebril's Spycatcher Express 2006 that did it. Why, I have no idea, but it must have scanned something as suspicious, quarantined it, and I was SOL. I booted in safe mode, removed the program, rebooted to regular start, and was off and running.

I've had problems with my other machines using Spycatcher. BEWARE!

Many thanks to all who responded.

Very odd. Today I tried to log on to my 4-month old laptop running XP (SP2). When clicking on the userid button, and supplying the password, it informs me

Domain FRED not available.

What's up with that? The machine was working just fine last I used it. The last program installed was Tenebril's Spycatcher 2006, but that was a few weeks ago.

Any ideas?😱😕

And if you don't, click the "more info" button (or something like that, I don't remember). It will show a box specifying what you are trying to authenticate against. Probably you want to do it on the local machine if you aren't part of FRED.

Good ideas; I will try these out. I *should* have access to FRED... I unplugged/replugged the router but haven't tried to log back on. I don't recall being offered another button as a choice, but I will look again.

Thanks!

Who maintains FRED and where do you normally access it from (are you connected to the same network as usual right now?)?

"Who maintains FRED and where do you normally access it from (are you connected to the same network as usual right now?)?"

I do; it's a home network (I'm at work now). And, I set the thing up as peer2peer, as I recall - if the router is down, I just don't get 'net or other machines (and FRED isn't the name of the lan, anyway). FRED is just the name of the machine. That's why I'm confused.

That message above is what you would get if the computer was a member of a domain named "FRED"; are you saying your machine is in a workgroup?

Yup.

That's definetly strange than. Any other system changes you may have made recently?

Some things to try:
Boot the computer into safe mode and log in using the local admin account. Take a look at the event log for any recent errors that may be related to the issue you're having. It may not matter but I would also ensure that the "Computer Browser" service is set to automatic.

If all else fails you should be able to run system restore from safe mode.

Good idea. It was late last nite when the gf informed me of the problem. Since all she wanted to do was check email, I had her use my machine. I'll work on this problem during the weekend. I was going to boot safe later to check stuff out, and your suggestions are very good ones.

Thanks!
