IBM fixed my machine on Thurs and had it back to me this morning. Now THAT is awesome tech support! :D

Hopefully it'll all work out now.

Original Post:

I was using Microsoft Word on my T40 last night, and all of a sudden it froze (keyboard & pointing devices did nothing). I had to turn the unit off by disconnecting the battery and AC adapter. It woudn't boot up after that! The fan & drives would come on if I hit the power button but the screen would remain blank (no POST). I called IBM and they had me take out the extra RAM I'd installed and the battery. It booted up and seemed fine for the rest of the night.

Then this morning I tried to boot it. Drives & fan powered up, but screen was blank. No POST. :( I removed all extra parts (RAM, WiFi, Optical, HDD, Touchpad) and it still didn't boot. Called IBM again and am sending it in for service.

IBM Support has been excellent (practically no waiting time, no call center in Bangalore) but I am disturbed that my machine has failed after only 9 months. :(

First of all, sorry to hear you're having problems. It's unfortunate such an expensive unit can break so soon. As much as IBM is touted in here, I've heard bad things about them from various people. A friend of mine who does IT for a large company recently told me his company dumped IBM for Dell and since then they've had far fewer problems.
Anyway, good luck.

Yeah, but I will take more problems that are resolved than less problems that you get to dick around with an Indian guy about for hours and hours.

I wish there were some definitive statistics on notebook reliability, but I can't find any. I like IBMs design and build quality. Dell may have good features for the $, but I can't stand Dell designs and the general cheap feel of most Dell notebooks. I have also had unfortunate dealings with Dell India tech support - it is really awful (hard to communicate, poor call quality).

Had the same problem on my T40 a few months ago, it was only a few weeks old at the time. Turned out to be a fubar motherboard and they replaced it.

Edit - I checked the status of my service call, and IBM has already repaired my T40 (repair code says parts were replaced) and shipped it out via Airborne Express! Now THAT is fast customer service! I should get it tommorow before noon :)

How many days did it take for repair? Airborne picked up my machine yesterday, and IBM got it at 7AM this morning.
