FIXED! Unable to ping, but can see in Network Neighborhood

*FIXED* - I took my cheap arse to the store and bought a router!

I have a problem I can't seem to figure out. I have two machines connected with a hub.

Machine 1 - WinNT 4 (sp6) with two nics. One with tcp/ip binding disabled and the other with IP 192.168.0.1
The nic w/out the tcp/ip is for my dsl (pppoe)

Machine2 - Win98se with one nic IP 192.168.0.211

Here's the weird part, the machines can see each other in network neighborhood (I'm assuming through netbios or ipx), but I can't ping either one in the command line. I'm assuming this is the reason I can't share my internet connection between them (using sygate) and would like to figure this one out. BTW, I'm a networking newbie if you can't tell!

Thanks for your help!

Some more info. They are networked with a 10/100 hub and I can see activity lights on the hub when I try to ping. Also, if I disconnect the cat5 from the hub and try to ping I get "destination host unreachable", where as when it is plugged in I get "Request Timed Out".

What are the network settings on the Win98SE machine?

Is the NT 4.0 machine able to use the 'Net fine with or without the Win98SE machine plugged in?

Is the Sygate software the latest version?

Do you have the server software installed on the server and the client software installed on the Win98SE machine? I know that sometimes Sygate works without the client software installed, but I would try it with it first.

<< What are the network settings on the Win98SE machine? >>

Huh? Not exactly sure what you're looking for here, but here's some info:
Components installed:
Client for MS Networks
Linksys nic
ipx/spx compatible protocol
NetBEUI
NetBios support for ipx/spx compatible protocol
tcp/ip
File and printer sharing for MS Networks

Primary Network Logon:
Client for MS Networks

I set up a user with admin privledges on the NT machine and login with that user on the 98 machine.

Yes (that's how I'm posting now 🙂 )

<< Is the Sygate software the latest version? >>

I uninstalled sygate because I just want to get the damn ping working for now!

See above answer.

Yah, I was going to recommend that. 😀
