My mothers computer has been hit with a webjacker from Claria. We use Adaware 6.0 and keep it updated regularly. Ad-Aware found and rid us of the webjacker program, but now Internet Explorer wont find any websites. I've tried reinstalling IE to no availe. My belief is there is a registry setting that is telling IE to look for a program or page before it goes out to the internet. Anyone know what I might be able to do to get IE to get out to the Internet again??

All help is appreciated.

Go to www.pcworld.com and search for Claria. They had a nice article about it in their weekly e-mail that gave all the details of riding yourself of this subset of Gator.

...Internet Explorer wont find any websites

Are they on dial-up or broadband? If it's dial-up, I've had to deal with 4 or 5 systems that seemed like the modem was bad, but after I ran spy bot, it worked normally.

Can you ping IP an address on the web? Are they coming up with DNS error messages? If so this link describes some proceedures that have worked well for me.

Checked with PCworld.com and I didnt find anything on how to reset the browser once you get rid of this. I've tried reinstalling IE6 and still get the "Page cannot be displayed" error. Yet I can ping yahoo.coms website ip address. I know it has to do with a setting in IE, but I've tried restoring IE defaults to no availe. I've also gone into the downloaded temp files and deleted anything that might be causing Ie to look somewhere before going out to the internet....

I would run a spyware program and uncheck IP header compression if its dialup.

Well I figured out what the problem was...

When my mother used ad-aware, she uninstalled all the software safely. Problem was, she didnt tell me that she had blocked any of the adware with Zone Alarm. So when I went and checked ZA, she had already removed the programs from the program list, so it looked as though those adware programs were gone. But the settings on ZA still wouldnt allow IE out to the internet. Once I uninstalled ZA, deleted the old ZA folder from the program files, then reinstalled and reconfigured it: Voila! Internet service once again.

Thanks for everyones suggestions! Even though most didnt do the trick, it still shows that theres people out there that give a sh!t enough to help out. Sometimes it helps just to know your not completely alone at the time, and that can do much to boost your moral.;)
