New compaq X1000 with Intel 2200BG miniPCI card connecting to Netgear MR814 router.

I tried IPrenew and release but it wouldn't renew. Had to plug in the wired connection to reset it.

I figure it's just a win (home) setting, but can't figure it out. I think the DNS and WINS don't have entries. IP Address is set to Auto Private.
TCP/IP set to autodetect.
What am I missing?

Also, is there somewhere I can set the channel in the laptop, or is that only set in the router?

Do I need the intel ProSet, since I am able to connect to the router?

Thanks

I presume that when you do have it connected on wire that it works? And that it receives an IP address from the router as normal? First you are going to want to make sure this is the case......as this will eliminate the chances that your laptop is not configured correctly to join a network. If it does work on wire then read on...

Auto Private? Which operating system are you using? XP?
This is what your system will use to assign a random IP address if it can't find your DHCP server....helpful if you don't have a router assigning IP addresses but a pain if you do. The setting you want to verify here is 'Obtain an IP address automatically' is selected.

Yes!! You'll definitely need to set your laptop channel to the same channel on your router. You'll also need to have your laptop have the same SSID as your router is configured with.

Do you currently have security disabled on your router? If not, turn it off until you're able to connect to it. You can always turn it on later when you get everything working.

If you do have XP, make sure your 'Wireless Zero Configuration' service has started.....also make sure you have turned 'Off' the 'Internet Connection Firewall' feature on your laptop under the 'Wireless Network Connection Properties. As you can see, there's many things that can be wrong at this point, you'll have to be a little more specific on what you have and what you have done.

thanks, but I think it's solved. I was surfing all evening without a hiccup.

I called compaq, and if you can believe it! a guy from canada (I think) answered in about 5 minutes and after giving him my config, said to do a firmware update on the netgear MR814v2 router, and stayed on the phone with me thru that, then we removed the encryption settings, and it worked. Then we added the encrytion back and it still worked. I am truly amazed. The whole thing took about 45 min. And I didn't once feel that he was incompetent. :D
I've read so much bad stuff about HP/CPQ cust service that I was prepared for the worst. Like them telling me it's not a hardware problem, solve it on my own!

I might actually keep this one. We got 2 - the x1000 today, and the T41, and I get to keep which one I prefer. :) The t41 is supposed to be here Friday.
