It is fixed now. Many thanks

I am still using a humble dial-up connection. My modem is a generic v92/v44 56 k Accex data/fax/modem (no voice, conexant chip).

However, I hate the sound when it dials. In ME, I don't know what I did but I was able to disable the sound (don't ask, I have no idea how I didi it) Now, everytime it dials in ME you have no sound at all (no tone dialing or the pitch of "connecting").

In w2k I have tried a lot of thing, but I cannot disble it (in sound, volume for phone line "mute"; I tried to say "don't map through devide" for the unimodem device, etc)

How do I disable the sound?? Can I do any registry hack??

for a Rockwell/Conexant chip-set based modem

In Windows /Start/Settings/Control Panel/Modems/Properties/Connection/
Advanced/ and in the extra settings box type M0 (that's M zero) to turn
off the speaker or M1 (M one) to only have the speaker on during
negotiation.

M0 = Turn speaker off
M1 = Turn speaker on until carrier detected
M2 = Turn speaker on while off-hook (permanently on while on-line)
M3 = Turn speaker on until carrier detected, except while dialling

L0 or L1 = Low volume
L2 = medium volume
L3 = loud volume

Darnit, I thought the v.92 modems didn't go through all that "noise" crap

On V.92 modems you still hear all the noise, but the handshakes (connection negotiations) are much shorter.

I always found the sound useful to tell if I was getting a good connection or not. But I always kept one connection silent to use at night when others were sleeping, open Dialup network in control panel make a new connection and name it "Quiet connection" then right click it and choose properties then advance and then "configure modem" and then turn down the volume with the slider ( must do this for the connection in particular and not the modem in general) And this worked in 98 but I am not sure about 2000 because in XP there is a block to uncheck to silence the speaker. It is at the same location.

Que?

That's how message boards tend to work. :p

If you want a lot of replies, go so hi in the off topic forum.

Oh....this is cool! But what about all the coaxial flutter I'm getting?

That being said, this thread is finally going to bed, as it should have,
