How can I tell if a video card is fixed frequency? I have an old CRT that only works with fixed frequency cards. When I plug it into a normal video card there is lines of red going from up to down on the screen.
Just look for an old @ss card that sucks at any 3d and costs a lot
Look up the specs for the monitor and set the video card to a res/refresh/whatever it will support on another monitor, then try using the fixed freq. one

Single frequency cards haven't been produced for a long long time (< 1991). Long before the advent of 3d. I think only the oldest ISA vga cards were fixed frequency. I used to have a CGA card which were fixed frequency but I never had a fixed frequency VGA card. Modern cards could technically be used but most modern cards I've seen don't come with any software to adjust the exact frequencies anymore.
What's this old CRT you have anyway that only works with fixed frequency cards? Are you sure it's even a vga monitor? Monitors are so cheap now that I don't think you should bother with a really old monitor.
