FIXED - Dual Monitor Problem W/9800 Pro

I have two Philips 170W4 wide screen (1280x768) LCD monitors. I'm trying to use them as a dual monitor set up on my 9800 Pro.

When my system starts, I see the POST info on both screens, and I see the Windows load screen on both. I've been to the properties tab and set my desktop to extend to both monitors, but I still get a "No Video Input" message on the second monitor.

What am I doing wrong?

Little more detail. I can get it to run with the ATI Display tab if I set the monitor to 60Hz - but that bumps it down to 1024x728. 🙁

I want both monitors to run at 1280x768. But the 61Hz rate puts my secondary monitor in sleep mode.

I do dual monitors with a GeForce4 Ti4600 card, so I'm not familiar with how the 9800 Pro works....

however, I'm guessing you might be putting too much strain on your graphics card or something by trying to run both monitors at 1280 resolution. What size power supply do you have?

Also, you might want to try running Ultramon or Multimon to see if it's just the software that's messing you up.

Edit: Czar is right.... I didn't pay attention to the fact that they were LCDs.

you can edit the registry somewhere and add a resolution of your desire, could add 60hz for your resolution

I dont exactly know how you can do it but I know you can do it 😛 hopefully someone else can help you

I might be from mars but I thought that LCD's didn't have any hz. That you can change it but it doesn't do anything at all. I may be wrong so feal free to provide proof I am please.

I don't appear to have the registry keys discussed in the artcile - and it also says it's for single monitor systems.

I downloaded RageTweak3d since others had said it supposed custom resolutions and all - and I'm able to select and adjust a 1280x768 @ 60Hz resolution - and it says at the bottom of the panel that the option will be available in the next boot cycle, but I don't see it anywhere.

Well the plastic sheet that's packaged on these monitors suggsts 60Hz for optimal performance, so I'm guessing they do.

refresh rates dont matter for lcds, because they dont use electron guns like crts. The refresh rate for a crt monitor is the number of times per second the electron guns shoot the image at the screen per second. An lcd, however, doesnt have electron guns that shoot an image at the screen. An lcd has subpixels that are either on, or off. So, the refresh rates on lcds dont matter.

hope that sorta makes sense

I have a 9700!

To get dual monitors you need to go to display settings. in the settings tab click on the advanced button.

In there is a tab that says monitors and should show (at max) 2 monoitors and 1 TV.

chouse which one you want to use as primary and secondary.

also keep in mind that if you watch movies it will only show the video on one screen, I get purple on the other.

I dont use extended desktop, just have 1 monitor and a TV, TV is primary.

Refresh rates seem to matter at least driver-setting-wise.

Here's the problem.

I can get full resolution (1280x768) on one monitor - my main one - using 1280x768 @61Hz. If I set the Hz to 60, it bumps the main monitor's resolution down to 1024x768.

I can get 1024x768@60Hz on the secondary monitor. Nothing else (except other standard sized like 800x600, etc). When I try to set it to 1280x768@61Hz, I get "No Video Input" and the monitor goes to sleep. When I try 1280x768 @60Hz, it bumps the resolution down to 1024x768.

Does that make the problem a bit clearer perhaps?

Well, I got it working with the latest Omega Catalyst drivers. Everything's set at 1280x768@60Hz and both run perfectly...

except there's some blurring. It's as if there are vertical columns about 2 inches apart on bother screens where there pixels can't decide which pixel on the screen they're going to use - so they use both. Blinking really quickly between one and the other in almost an anti-aliasing effect.

What is the cause of this, and how can it be fixed?

Nevermind - my monitors just needed to be resynchronized with the Auto button. Everything's perfect now! 😀

Thanks for trying, everyone. This one just required some old fashioned trial and error.

glad it worked, I'm hopefully going to get two lcd's soon so I'm happy this wasnt a big problem to fix 😀
