If you are responding to my post, I have no idea what "UBCD" means, and "wipe and reformat" does not detect and repair or block off damaged sectors on the platter.

What he needs to do is as I said in my post above, and then his Windows installation should go smoothly. Chkdsk /x !

then you obviously did not read all the posts, and skimmed and are making assumptions. I would suggest you check out that and know REAL techs use it, and REAL techs do the research before giving advice.

My computer has been giving me problems, so I'm trying a fresh XP install to see if it fixes it.

I tried to re-install XP and during instalation everything was going ok but then it said it needed some files from the D: drive, so I browse and try to select it but it has a red question mark beside the D: icon and it says it does not exist, I try to open and close the cd rom tray and nothing happens, it won't open or respond at all and yet it was just working fine during the rest of the instalation. So I just press cancel and have to press cancel twice for 2 different things.

Windows finishes installing but I am missing a bunch of stuff, like it only has the classic skin and I can't seem to set up my internet. I open the cd and go to add files from the cd like explorer and networking etc... but I get 2 error messages (which I have pictures of but can't upload.

So I try to just restart the whole instalation but I get the same thing where the cd-rom stops responding at the same point into the instalation. So to try and get it to respond I unplug and plug it's power suply which gives me the blue screen of death... So I restart again and it still stops responding at the same point in the instalation. :(

How can I get it to be recognized so I can finish this properly?

EDITED with info

All my hardware is 3 years old:

Motherboard: Chaintech Zenith ZNF3-250
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ ClawHammer 2010MHz
1028 MB of Kingston DDR PC3200 400MHz
XFX 128 MB Nvidia GeForce FX5200
80GB WD Caviar EIDE HD 7200/8MB/ATA-100
Windows XP Pro SP2
CD drive: AOpen 12X DVD+/-RW

I think my BIOS Revision Number is 5.0.31

Thanks a lot. Help is very appreciated

Send me the c:\windows\setup*.* logfiles and I can take a look if you like; that will tell what actually happened during the install process....

No files? If he can install Windows at all (and he is - he is in to 31 minutes remaining at least) the files will be written.

Cut out the snide comments.

OP - What were the original problems? (i.e. your reason for reinstalling)
Let me know if you need another XP CD to try.

he posted those on 10/29/2007. you guys have not been working on this, and your halfcocked ideas are just that.

More insults as people try to help the OP. What's your problem?

Again, I suggest that the OP do the install (as he mentioned on 10/29) and then let's look at those files. They can be had with a rt shift-F10 during install at 31 minutes or so (to get to a command line, to copy data to another disk volume), via booting with BartPE CD or Ultimate Boot CD (with a USB key stuck in the computer) or certainly other ways.

Another alternative is to put an IDE PCI card into the machine and attach CD & hard drive to the new card, to eliminate motherboard IDE as a possible problem.

I'll ask that the OP confirm nothing is overclocked or run over spec on his machine.

that does not eliminate the problem, just covers it up till it gets worse. you always assume it's software, without checking the primary component of any computer, THE HARDWARE. I am also extremely suspicious of someone pushing a executable every time. I also find it very suspicious that your supposed site is always down.

Again with the personal attacks...
The EXE is from Microsofts own website, what is the problem?
Dclive's site has always worked for me, and it's a good one for troubleshooting and reporting.
Are you accusing him of pushing viruses or what? Or just questioning his abilities to run a website.

no, neither jealous (why would I be of someone that was not taught properly) and not pompous (just because I fix problems and work towards making the system stable, I'm pompous). all i can say is , Jealous Much?

How would it get worse? If the issue is the MB's IDE controller, that gives the OP a working system again at minimal cost.

How does that assume it's a software problem? That suggestion (add a PCI IDE card) is a hardware solution.

If my site appears to be down, check with your ISP and ask them why livenode.com sites aren't working, or fix your DNS.

If you looked at the link in the EXE you'd quickly see it goes to Microsoft.com. If you don't trust them, buy a Mac.

robisbell,

Cool it!

Now! (one of Jack Bauer's favorite exclamations)

This is a cooperative community where people are exploring and exchanging ideas (except for P&N forum).

It's natural that everybody is drawing on different unique troubleshooting experiences as they try to help contribute solutions.

That means everybodies' ideas won't parallel yours.

Conclusion is: You don't have the lead. Please don't expect people to line up behind you and endorse your suggestions.

Again, everybody is drawing on different unique troubleshooting experiences, where the thing that worked may have been very different than how you see it.

Best tack: be friendly as you continue for a long time to add value to the group.

scott, I'm trying but when some of them jump in and give bs advice or make uncalled for comments, makes me edgy whenever I spend time working on an issue, and they start shooting off ideas with out ever reading everything that has been done.
I'm not wanting to lead or expect anyone to follow my lead, I just feel bad when I see problems being patched up with their fixes only to come back worse.

well, seems the dvd drive is buggy, even tho it would playback and record fine, tried swapping it for a cd drive and the install went smoothly.
