Some may remember my thread about how I dropped 1 month old 24-70mm f/2.8 lens resulting bent mount ring.
I finally got it fixed:). Not only it was cheaper than I thought it'd be but also the elements of the lens is intact.

I didn't want to send it to the Canon service center as Fuzzybunny mentioned their minium charge is $250, not to mention to time it'd consume.
As suggusts by many of you guys, I was thinking about getting the mount ring and replacing it by myself. However, it turned out that there was a local Canon certificated service center and I got it fixed there.

The charge came down to:
(I've lost the bill so I'm probably off a few dollars)

1. $25 for basic service charge. This is the charge that you gotta pay in order to use their service.
2. $28 for the labour
3. $42 for the mount ring.

Well, I'm just happy to get it fixed and the lens elements survived the impact.

BTW, one strange thing; there are 4-8 mount ring types for 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. I just don't understand the logic of it. Wouldn't it just increase the manufacturing cost, not to mention the extra hassle?
I can't really confirm it but it's what I've been told by the service center.

1-Minimum amount is about 180. Anyway, you still got a hell of a deal.
2-Lenses are made in batches. When the batch is done, the lines are retooled, and sometimes the parts change. Spare parts are made on the same batch or "run", and they usually make so much there are spare parts available for years.
For example, on the new zoom lenses that are of recent date, the AF, IS, focusing limiter switches, etc. are harder to bump on accident. Also there is the European "E" symbol that notes in certified for some kind of eco standard.
Lenses are often revised without warranting a new version number.
