FIXED!! Cannot uninstall old card or install new card

7 year old Dell inspiron pc
Win 7 Home Premium
8 gig ram
1 tb hard drive & ! tb h drive as a second drive
Yesterday (Thur) grandaughter turned pc on to play Mindcraft.
Pc started but the display was all garbled.
I had to turn the pc off using the on/off button.
Turned pc back on, booted it into the safe mode then restarted it.
Pc started ok, but after a few minuted the screen was all garbled again, then the BSOD came on saying the vider driver (before I could read more the pc rebooted) I was able to start it again and changed the resolution down to 640/480 and the pc worked ok. I went back to the higher resolution and the pc dumped, etc.
The video card is the original from Dell and is a Radeon 3450.
PCI 2 x16.
I went to my local Best Buy today and bought a XFX R7 Radeon (model R7-240_cl) That card was all they had left on the shelf.
When I installed the card I got a error message saying,,,,
Cannot load detection driver and the install failed. Upon reading the installation directions they said to remove the old drivers, etc.
I put the old card back in, booted the pc and tried to remove the old ATI driver. Same message came up when using the ATI ininstall software. "
failed to load detection driver."
Ok,,, went into the Dell site, downloaded the newest driver which is still the ATI Radeon driver but updated in 2012. That failed to install saying "Failed to load detection driver."
I have no idea on what to do next.

With the new card in, uninstall the old drivers. Reboot. Install the video drivers off the CD that came with the card. The Dell site will not gave drivers for the video card purchased at BB.

When I originally posted I was trying to remember what I did to get me into this mess!!! LOL
I did install the new card and then used the cd that came with the new card to do the install. That didn't work.
I played around with the pc last night. Found when I downloaded the "latest driver" for the old card it was the wrong one.
I have things bacck to normal (I hope) with the driver for the old card.
Goinf to start the pc. Create a restore point. Delete the old driver AND software. When I look at the window to check the driver version, etc, there is a box to check if I want to remove all the software too. I will do that. Then, shut the pc down, install the new card and go from there.

Got things back to normal with the old video card. Was able to install new card, remove old drivers, install new drivers. New drivers installed without a problem.
At the end of the new driver install a screen came up saying that a update is available.
Ok, installed the update.
Then,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, restarted the pc. Windows startup screen came on. Then,,, screen goes black!!! Nothing, nada, kaput. Manually shut pc down, then started the pc. Windows start screen comes on,,, then,,, black..............
Ok,,,, shut pc down,,,, start pc and start it in the safe mode. Pc starts and runs in the safe mode. Go to control panel, etc. New card shows with new driver. (Not the updated driver)
Any suggestions!!!! (other then shooting it!!!LOLOL)

Eh, just stick with the old drivers. Uninstall from safe mode, restart and reinstall from regular mode. Don't update and enjoy your new card.

Back again.
Finally got the pc to see the card and to associate the driver with the card. STILL DOESN'T WORK!!!!
I can boot into the safe mode and everything works.
When I open system to look at things it shows "Generic Monitor"
Ok,,, I had a old Samsung monitor and connected it to the new card using the old analog connector. Success!!! Everything works. Open system window to check if it shows the old monitor model, etc and it does.
Ok,,, go to the Samsung web site and download the driver for newer monitor. That download had to uninstall then install new driver. (or so it said)
Removed old monitor, connected newer monitor and ARGGGGGGGGGGGGG!! Nothing. Pc boots, Windows Starting logo shows, then,,, BLACK, kaput. nada.
Restarted pc in safe mode, went to system window for monitor, still shows generic, standard, etc.
Reinstalled driver,
Nothing..............

Now,,, do I have a bad video card,,,,,, or Monitor,,, or still screwed up drivers?????

Monitor I am trying to use is a Samsung Model XL2270 Model code LS22C3UKFY/SA
I remember way back when I bought the monitor at Sams Club I had some problems with the install and warranty registration, etc. After that close to 5 years of trouble free service.
Sigh,,, any more suggestions???

Monitor model does not matter. As long as it can show in image at your resolution, I would leave well enough alone.

Should it give you these problems? No. But when it gets to working fine, just leave it at those settings.

One thing I would recommend is checking the cable. Can you swap it with another one and see if you stll have problems?

Ok,,, trying to remember what I did.
Had a older LCD monitor and connected it to the new video card. Cable was d-sub to dvi and older monitor worked.
Found a dvi to dvi to dvi cable. Connected new card to older monitor with the dvi to dvi and it works.

Disconnected everything.
Connected current monitor to new card using the d-sub to dvi cable and it works.
Used the old dvi to dvi cable and it didn't work.
Bought a new dvi to dvi cable, connected it to the new card and current monitor,,, It didn't work.

Now, I am down to either the new card will not work with my monitor, or monitor will not work with new card.
Wonder if the new card is too new and updated for the monitor?

I might take the new card back to BB and get a cheaper less powerful card to see if that works.
Or,,, take the monitor to BB Geek Squad and let them run it on their setups.

D-sub was on which end? From reading your post it sounds like there is a bad DVI connection somewhere.

Let me also say that my setup is a little picky about connection. If i pull my dvi cable from the card, it will not power the other dvi connection. I have to restart if I want to switch connections. Almost never run into this, but it would bug me if I was trying to troublshoot a video problem.

Reboot safe mode and run DDU to remove all traces of previous drivers:

Reboot. Install latest driver from AMD website (assuming 64-bit Windows):

This sounds suspiciously like a HDCP issue... from long ago (2007?) drivers assume your monitor is hdcp compliant on all digital inputs.

You will experience a black screen upon WDDM initialisation during bootup if HDCP fails.

The fact that vga and dvi work fine on one monitor but no dvi on another points to this.

Unlikely u have this handy but a ps3 with a hdmi to dvi cable would boot to a black screen to confirm this is the case.

Best solution is to unfortunately stick to vga or test/look at a newer monitor.

Might be well off the mark with this but have encountered a very similar issue in the past.

Sorry I am slow getting back here. I had to take a day away from the problem to clear my mind and take care of family matters, etc.
I went back to my original idea when I bought a new video card. When I bought the new card the BB salesman kinda led me to buying the card with the Radeon chip and 2 gig or memory................. Well,,, that ended up not being compatible, etc with my system.
I went back to basics, bought a cheap PNY card with the NVIDIA Chip.
Pulled old card, installed NVIDIA card, and up and running for the past 4 hours. When I powered the pc up, windows found and installed the NVIDIA drivers.
No idea how current the driver is BUT,, I AIN'T GONNA GO LOOKIN AND POKIN!! LOLOL But, I did look at the driver name and date and it shower 2/5/2015. That's good enough for me!!! LOLOL

Honest question (hopefully you see this post before anyone poisons my question):

Based on your experience, which product line would you recommend to family/friend(s) if they ever asked you? AMD or Nvidia? Thanks.

This was probably related to a chipset or PCIe slot incompatibility. The OP is running a very old OEM system. While the incompatibility seemed to be specific to AMD, it's not because one or the other cards are bad. I will say that I've had trouble running Radeon HD4000 series and beyond cards in older systems using Nvidia chipsets, for example. Might have been the issue here.

P.S. Railven - I don't think you're running a Z79 motherboard.
