[fixed] bizarre problem with router/adapter

edit: using WPA-PSK worked! not sure why it did compared to the other thing 😵

well i'm not sure what to do here so i decided to ask here and see what options i might have.

we have a netgear wgr614 wireless router. its never gave us any issues over the past couple of years.

basically, all of the computers can connect to it except mine with a dell 1450 usb adapter

now, i've spent the past couple days trying to figure out why. i installed the latest driver for my adapter. flashed the most recent firmware to the router. but every time it would fail to connect.

today i was just going to throw it out b/c i thought it was broken or something. but one last thing i just tried was to disable wep.. and low and behold the adapter connected then!

but there is the problem. if i disable wep then anyone can connect to our network.. but if i don't disable it, then i can't connect.

i tried everything i could think of and for some reason thats the only way my adapter will connect.

so is there any way i can stay connected but also not allow anyone and everyone to connect?

Or if it is WEP only, do not type in the passpharse, copy and paste the hex code from the Router to the USB card.

I remember those things. There were bugs with WEP and encryption. You may have to go to an older driver on it.

my options are either disable, wep 64bit, 128 bit (i tried both and they both wouldn't let me connect) or wpa-psk

i dont think i can copy and paste the code, since the usb adapter is on a different computer

i just tried the most recent driver, but maybe i'll try some older ones. its a pain in the butt to uninstall/reboot/reinstall though 🙁

Yap, that is why I suggested the copy and paste of the Hex, that usually by passes the bug.

No, I mean there were serious bugs with them. We worked on some of them for a month with wireless sniffers and everything and it finally came down to they mistakenly set a shared vs. open in the association process but only did it when encryption was used. Was a very unusual problem.

Also - OP could try to use the wireless utility instead of windows zero config.

I am related to another bug which is that the algorithm that generates the Hex code from the passphrase has different version in renditions of hardware.

Sometimes entering the passphrase in the Router generate a certain code.
However when entering the same passphrase in the card it generates a different Hex code.

By copy and paste the Hex code from the Router to the card the problem is bypassed.

how do i copy and paste when the adapter and the router are on two different machines

strange thing is it worked perfectly with my wireless b router. but this one is trying to connect to is a 'g'.. which is really odd b/c both router and adapter is b/g
