Fix or scrap?

My Presario 2135 (Celeron 1.8, 30GB, ?maybe upgraded to 512MB RAM) has been a poor performer. Battery life is 20 minutes on a good day. I've had lots of windows crashes. Now I've got physical errors on the hard drive.

Should I just spend the $75 to replace the 30GB Hitachi (Pricegrabber)? Or would I be better off with a different hdd? I don't know much about notebooks but I'm familiar with IBM/Hitachi's deathstar reputation.

Or should I scrap the whole thing and build a microatx box? I'm not very familiar with SFF machines but I've been building desktops for years. Any recommendations for a small fanless middle of the road type machine?

physical errors on the hard drive means you need a new hard drive.

Then again, it is a Compaq... I say SFF. Fanless is not the way to go, though. WAY too hot.
