Basically, i've been in market for a 2nd big tv for playin 360 mainly
So a friend offered me his broken projection tv (4yrsold).
He said the repairs would cost approx $500, but that was in-home.
ANd i would opt for in-shop repair, so i would hope its cheaper?

THe model is: Sony KP-51WS510, its a 51" projection tv.

So what do you guys think?

Why not? A couple hundred bucks and you have a new TV. If it's a CRT the picture will be amazing.

I'm considering doing the same thing with a Sony KT-57WP600. The alignment is WAY off and they said it would cost ~$250 to fix it. So, for $250 I'd have a decent 57" TV sitting in my living room. I think it's worth it.

If you don't mind projection TVs then I think it would probably be worth it.

Its certainly not a CRT, a 51" CRT would way 1000lbs+! Biggest CRT ever made was only 40" if i remember correctly. My parents 36" sony must way at least 300lbs, cant imagine what a 51" one would weigh.

do sony projection tvs looks good? I have personally never seen a projection tv that looked good to me. Image is always out of whack and the colors just seem washed out.

Looks like one of those infamous "1080i-only" sets. Not a problem with the 360 or Wii, but you might run into some problems with a PS3 down the road.

CRT projection blows away any flat panel displays, especially LCD when it comes to color and black level. Of all the HDTVs I have the one that still looks the best is the CRT projection.

Kick your friend in the nuts and throw the TV back at him. I would never give broken things to friends, even if they can be fixed or within warranty. Who the hell does that?!

I did that with my last projector. At least one of the blue polarizers was busted, so I offered it to the person who bought my first projector. He gladly took it.

So 2 frigging weeks later the repair shop finally got the flyback transformer.
Now they have to order 2x convergence chips?

I asked for a cut in repair cost due to long wait for repairs.
He said he's already eating cost of coverg. chips.

Anyone know approx costs of 1xFlyback Transformer and 2x Convergence Chips.
Trying to estimate costs of repair... THanks!

I have a 51" Hitachi that I got for free.
Local sears store dropped it moving it off the truck and that broke the mirror.
Manager gave it to me just to move it.
Mirror cost about 40.00 at local hardware store :)

Flyback transformers can cost anywhere from 20.00 to 200.00.
It also depends on how the set powers each crt, there will be 3. RGB.
Some use a single flyback with 3 connections while others use a separate flyback for each crt.
Try here, it should be listed if its not too old.

Thanks, www.partstore.com had it all....
The shop is charging the full $350, they claimed $140ish in parts, remainder in labor.
DOes that sound in line? For 1 flybak and 2 converg. chips?
