Fix it or sell it? You decide. (by it, I mean an old PIII 766 laptop)

I have a Dell laptop that isn't working, I think it has a broken motherboard. They go for about $100-120 on eBay. I could fix it up and sell it for around $375-400.

or, I could just part the thing out and sell it for parts, and make about $100.

Go through the hassle of getting a new mobo? It could be something else, like a dead CPU which would make the costs even more.

sell as is....you risk breaking something taking it apart and/or trying to fix it...in which case you'll get 0

Like Cheezeit said, it kinda depends on the age of the thing... If it's an old PII laptop or something, part that sucker out and upgrade. Anything fairly new, and it might be worth replacing.

It's hard to tell if the mobo is dead or if it's something else, so it might be best to just part the sucker out or sell the whole thing as-is. If you find out it's not the board, then you are in for even more money, which would suck.

It's an old PIII laptop, probably like a 766 or something.

Yea, that's what I'm thinking too, but the prospect of making 200% the investment is tempting. I'll probably ebay it for parts then.

I disagree.

If you know for sure it's only the motherboard and the laptop is in good shape, fix it then sell it.

Yeah, if he was SURE that's the problem I would fix and sell as well. Being unsure of what the problem really is, there's no telling what he will get into.

It might be worth it to try a new mobo... Even if it's not that, you can turn around and sell the new mobo for about what you paid for it, no real loss there, assuming you can unload it.

I'm not sure. It could be the mobo or the CPU, or even maybe the video card, but probably the mobo.

Replacement parts for things like that usually cost more than the item is worth.

I still have a Thinkpad 600E. It's a P2 400 with 192 megs of RAM. It's in mint condition, too. It's a shame seeing such a flawless laptop be so slow.

Then just part it out, it's probably not worth the risk.
