Fix If Mircosoft / Windows Update Shortcuts Do Not Work

A heads up for all out there:

If you have installed IE8 you will find the Windows Update
and Microsoft Update shortcuts on the Start Menu will not
work. The workaround is to go into IE8 and Microsoft.com
to run in Compatability Mode .. You would expect (not)
that of all companies, Microsoft would make their own
browser work with their update programs.

Works fine for me without running in compatibility mode.

If your WU shortcuts don't work you may want to check if your system is infested with Conficker. iirc, that's one of the symptoms.

I suppose it is worth a check ... But on 2 computers ? ? I think it is just a glitch at microsoft and IE8 as it did work ok in IE7 Also if it was Conficker, then I probably would not be able to get to the sites even in compatability mode. Also, if I type in the URL in IE it goes to the correct site. Would not Conficker block access to the URL thru the Browser ? ?

Edit: Just ran a full scan and no issues were found.

If this were a glitch caused by MS we would have heard something about it. Since it's not Conficker, more likely it has something to do with your personal system configuration, i.e. - some 3rd party software (like firewall or AV) contributing to the issue.

I thought about those, but I am running Avira for Antivirus and just the XP built in firewall. If it was a firewall issue, it would still not work after changing the compatabilty setting in IE8 .. They did work ok in IE7. IE8 has IEPro installed on it and perhaps that is the issue as it may not be 100% bug free yet with IE8
