Fix Car Antenna?

It was really windy recently, and a branch broke off of a tree and snapped off my car antenna. There's now only a plastic tubing that used to be inside the antenna. How much would it take to fix? Or could I fix it myself?

Many antennas just screw down. You ought to be able to just buy another one and install it with a crescent wrench if nothing else.

Yeah, it was a power antenna...it stopped working for a couple of years. That's why it was up all the time...I guess if that had been working, it wouldn't be broken now.

Does that mean it'll be harder to fix?

Oh.
Yeah, harder to fix 😀

I wouldn't mind if I could fix it by putting a regular antenna in its place, is that feasible?

Sure, you can put a regular antenna in place of it. You can also buy replacement power ones.

Edit: It may not bolt right in, but it shouldn't be too hard to adapt.

It may be, but I can't say without reservation.
Try just calling an auto parts store and seeing if they have something that'll work with your vehicle.

So if it stopped working did you pull the fuse or did it just stop trying to go up and down? You can buy a new mast (the part that goes up and down) but it'll be a pain to install if the power portion isn't operable.

About three years ago, I took my Mom's Maxima to the carwash. I forgot that power antennae and carwashes don't mix. When I drove out, I realized that the antenna was perpendicular to the angle it had been before...bent straight back. I think it cost about $150 installed.

Edit: This was a 1998 Maxima, by the way.

WTF!!! Man, what a rip. That is, assuming it was just the mast that was replaced. If that's the case, its about a 15 minute job tops.

Most auto parts store "universal" antennas are anything but, meaning they don't fit anything properly. Check the dealership for a non-power antenna that will fit right in. A new one was only $16 for my Civic. YMMV, but I don't see why it would be much more than that for any car, unless it's a European.
