Check this out. Proud Papa has video clip of his son beating the final boss in Quake III, followed by 10 pages of people essentially going "cool". Am I the only one that has a problem with this?

Probably..

I think it's impressive personally.. my 7 year old cousin can barely walk straight in Quake 3, much less frag others... and this is a kid who plays Nintendo quite a lot -- but I think the Q3 controls were a little too complex (wasd configuration with +mlook)

A 5 year old kid should be outside playing soccer or something. Not sitting in front of a tv or computer playing games.

why whats wrong with sitting in front of the computer playing games? Why should everyone that 5 years old be playing outside all the time? He should learn to do things he likes to do instead of what ur stereotypically suppose to do.

I agree, partially. Run around playing war or football, then come inside to play some NES. That was my childhood in a nutshell :D

BTW, I can't seem to watch this file, Media Player tries downloading something but fails. Anyone know where to download a codec to play this?

I think exposing a kid to that kind of violence early in childhood is not a good idea. Just cause the kid likes to play video games doesnt mean he should always be playing them. I dont mind kids playing video games, they should just be well rounded. I got a feeling that a 5 year old who can master quake that well is spending a bit too much time on the computer.

My concern is that this five year old does not have the mental capacity to understand what death really is. So if we are letting a five year old theoretically kill people and they are automagically respawning like nothing happened, then we are giving them a very twisted sense of what death really is. And that could be dangerous.

I agree with fobb, can a 5 year-old truly understand death? I know when I was that age, that game would have been offlimits.

I don't think he should be playing it at 5 years old. When I was that age I was still watching Sesame Street and the Muppets.

fobbman, Mr Isla and I battled over this a few years ago. I would go to night classes and he would babysit by putting our then 18 month old in his lap while he played Doom, Duke Nukem, Quake, etc. She is now a fanatic and will one day probably be a champion game player.

I'm not sure how I feel about it, but it was one of those things that I just had to let go. I'd rather her see violence on the PC than see Mom and Dad in mortal combat... it isn't a battle I could have won, so I decided to do what I could to balance things out instead. So now, she's a budding computer geek AND takes piano lessons! :D

Its funny how the media doesn't say anything about the violence in wrestling, considering that fatboy killed some little kid with wrestling moves.

i know of a four year old at a local lan place that plays counter-strike. it's cute as hell, since he has to stretch out both his arms so he could use the wsad and mouse at the same time. it's funny, he knows how to buy weapons and he kills too! although it is cute, i don't believe that little kids should be playing games at that age. i don't think kids should be playing games until they are about 6. i believe the introduction of schooling is the most important thing in the early years.

The father says he makes sure the kids knows that it is really just a game and hopefully that is true. But that's not the only problem IMO.

To be that good... Well the difficulty obviously looks very low because Xaero never even gets close to hitting him with his rockets but still the kid is five and is using the mouse. Has a pretty nice shot with the railgun too (doesn't zoom for whatever reason). I'm not sure how long it took me to get pretty good with the mouse in FPS when I was like 10 or 11 but that was after using the keyboard. So the kid must play this game a lot... rather than outside or whatever doing what most kids do. Sure a lot of us here sit on our computers most of the day but I think we at least had an active childhood!

That's cool. As long as he still does stuff besides gaming, I see nothing wrong with it. May he be the next tourney winner or something! :Q

Actually, all the scientific studies I've read say that there is no proven effect of viewing violence on children 6 years old and up. One of my sociology finals years ago had that question. Under that age...
