Have you ever read this MLK quote? I actually hadn't 'til today. Read it and reflect. Great man, great quote.

"Never, never be afraid to do what's right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society's punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way."
-Martin Luther King, Jr.

It amazes me that people still try and tear him down.
He really was an American hero.

More like an world hero who happened to be American.

I always thought his speeches, his deepest intents weren't just black-centric, but were more world-centric. Basically telling people, begging people to be more open minded, more accepting, more forgiving and understanding across all boundaries.

Just look at the quote Mosh posted... that stands true for anyone, in any given situation. It's a shame more people don't listen and hear his message.

MLK was just so awesome. The black community (and the world) really needs more leaders like him.

You know what's funny, and I hate to turn this political, but I would have pictured Obama as a MLK Jr, if he wasn't in office and a simple tool of the machine. He really carried with him that same presence and speech-ability I think. He probably could have done more for the US, or for the World just as a political activist than getting into politics itself. (He may have even actually EARNED that Peace Prize).

In today's world, if you want to make a difference, you need to stay out of politics.

Haha, yup. He would have been a president at the right time ... but sadly, he would have, probably, still been assassinated. I was thinking he'd be more like Kennedy ... great, captivative speaker.

I think he could have (and did) more outside the politics though. The problem with politics is you are accountable and can't just BE YOURSELF and YOUR vision/ideals. That's where people like Obama go astray. You can have all the best intentions in the world, but once you enter that fray, you're intentions are impossible.

Not that MLK could have had the chance to be elected. He would have been shot down way sooner if he did.

Still one of my all time favorite songs by U2 is "MLK" Beautifully written and performed:

Sleep
Sleep tonight
And may your dreams
Be realized
If the thundercloud
Passes rain
So let it rain
Rain down on him
Mmm...mmm...mmm...
So let it be
Mmm...mmm...mmm...
So let it be
Sleep
Sleep tonight
And may your dreams
Be realized
If the thundercloud
Passes rain
So let it rain
Let it rain
Rain on him

The difference was ambition. MLK wasn't interested in his personal gain nearly to the extent of our President.

99% of people either don't follow that statement, or follow it, while not knowing what is actually right

I don't think it's so much that, it's his family everyone is after. Those guys are greedy and don't care about civil rights.
Back on topic, MLK was a great man, and I love hearing him speak.

Will the History Channel have anything on him today? Or will they do something lame like have a bullshit marathon on ice truckers?

Between Martin Luther King jr and Obama, I think I would rather have MLK as president any day over what we have right now

I always liked this one:

What is needed is a realization that power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love.
-Martin Luther King, Jr.
