Fitness Question

Well I'm planning on integrating treadmill running with my daily weightlifting schedule and was curious if it is better to run before you lift or vice versa? I heard that it?s better to run before lifting but it would be great so see what you guys think about this.

When I went to the gym, they used to have you warm up on treadmills (5 - 10 mins). They said it was get to get your "juices" going.

I'd alternate days of cardio/weight lifting. Both are going to tax the body (if done correctly) so you may want to conserve energy for both rather than half-assing it on one or the other. If that makes any fvcking sense whatsoever.

run before your workout to get heart rate up for about 10 mins. run for 10-15 mins after workout. great cardio.

I've heard it's better to do it prior as well, however I'm not sure of the exact reason. I personally always did cario afterwards, because I have asthma, and if I run first, I will be too tired and out of breath to have a good weight lifting session.

I'm about to move into an apartment (hopefully) that has treadmills in the basement. If I do, I plan on doing my cardio completely away from the gym, which will really help me mentally. Alot of my cardio problems arise because once I'm at the gym for more than 60 minutes, I start to get antsy and just want to get out. So while I'm doing my cardio after I lifted weights for 60 minutes, I typically just want to leave, and I'll get fatigued quicker because of my mental block of "I just wanna leave". This way I'll be able to do cardio before work, or at odd hours like midnight, and can just go down there from a few floors up.

I would also split them up. But if you want to do both on the same day, it's no big deal. That being said, I would lift first for sure. If you lift after running, you'll have no energy for lifting.

as others have said, doing it on alternate days from weight lifting is def. the way to go... heavy work outs over an hour long (unless you're a pro, ie on steroids) tend to produce diminishing returns, so it's best not to try to cram everything into one day.

in general though, you always want to do 5-10 minutes of very light cardio before doing any exercise (lifting or heavier cardio). this gets your hart pumping, the blood flowing and warms you up. it'll make the workout better and reduce chance of injury.

on the days that i do cardio the same day as lifting (due to time constrictions or whatever), i do the cardio after lifting. i find my lifting is way worse after cardio where as my cardio after lifting is only slightly worse...

When I swam in college:

- Sprinters lifted first, then swam.
- Distance swimmers swam first, than ran.

So, I guess that you should do your "specialty" first. If you are interested in strength, then lift first. If you are interested in endurance, then run first.

Just my opinion.

You were misinformed.

It is better to do your hard cardio after lifting for 2 reasons, and both compliment each other. (a 10-15 minute warm up before is OK).

Weight lifting is all about intensity. If you wear yourself out doing hard cardio before, you cannot devote nearly as much intensity to your lifting.

Cardio is all about lowering your glycogen stores to the point that your body starts to consume signifigant amounts of fat for energy. Doing cardio after you lift means you will start burning more fat sooner in your cardio routine because you have burned off signifigant amounts of glycogen while lifting.

In short, both your lifting AND cardio will be MORE effective if you do cardio after lifting.

I ran first (30 minutes on a treadmill) before lifting because losing weight was more important to me than building muscle.

runners call it hitting the wall when the glyco stores in your blood are extinguished and the body is forced to go to fat stores for energy.

Your cardio would have been far more effective at burning fat had you done it after lifting. Your body burns more fat faster if you lift first because your glycogen stores have been used lifting the weights.
