Fitness Question

Is it a bad idea to consume alcoholic beverages after a workout (weight lifting, cardio, etc.)?

I've heard conflicting stories on whether or not it affects muscle growth. 😕

I sure it doesn't help your fitness goals, unless your goal is to have a fat gut. But it isn't going to totally ruin you either. It is probably just bad b/c it's empty calories and it dehydrates you.

I would think dehydration would be a major concern. I wouldn't do it immediately post-WO. I think you should be alright a couple hours later. Try to drink plenty of water if you do drink.

edit: As for muscle growth, I have no idea how ethanol would affect hypertrophy. Water, however, is a major component in muscle growth.

I know many many runners swear by a few beers after a marathon. Of course, after bruning nearly 3000 calories, you need as many as you can get, regardless of the source. I would imagine that one or two beers wouldn't hurt you too bad, just drink a lot of water/gatorade as well.

I'm thin and not concerned about calories.

I wasn't talking about quenching my thirst with a beer after a workout.

What I was talking about was working out around 4-6, and maybe having some drinks at 8-11.

nah, that's fine. Just get some good protein and a lot of fluid in you between the time you workout and when you start drinking. I would not recommend drinking a few beers at happy hour before you workout though. It tends to make the workout less intenses...lol

I got completely smashed, worked out at 8 the next day...and you literally sweat the booze out of your system...it definitely effected me on my 3rd sets, but otherwise no biggie

I don't think it will do anything to your muscle growth, but it is fattening and dehydrating, and dehydration in particular will definitely have a negative impact.
