corolla is a separate line.

there was a sizeable (5 or 6 year) gap between tercel and echo

ford and DCX don't have sub compacts in the US either.

The "only?"

I think only Hyundai/Kia, Chevy, and Toyota have ultra compacts...or am I wrong?

Pfft...Americans would fit *fine* in it.

It's our MASSIVE EGOS that won't fit.

Seriously - cars like this are awesome, and I'd love to have one and see the cities filled with them....if every other driver wasn't in a Hummer or Expedition with the bumper somewhere above the top of the car.

I'll never understand what people hope to prove with those things.

It looks like a great successor to the Civic Hatchback, except with 5 doors. (I'm thinking it might be like a smaller Civic Wagon.)

". . . it will be powered by a 1.5-liter engine equipped with dual overhead camshafts and direct fuel injection."

That's good because it will almost certainly make more than 100 HP. Does anybody know how much the 2nd Generation Fit weighs? I hope it's light and zippy. If it's moderately fun to drive, I'll be all over it.

I wouldn't buy one, but I could see why some people would. However I don't see it being a real big seller, only thing going for it is name recognition.

Civics aren't even that small anymore. So what about the mini cooper then? And then there is the elise which makes the mini cooper look like an SUV.

well thats the point..civics about as small as they need to be. minis are speciality market. they certainly aren't small for price savings.
