Fishing tournament anglers caught cheating.

These men were caught putting weights in the fish that they caught so the fish would weigh heavier. These guys had won hundreds of thousands of dollars in the past. They were also heavily sponsored, and had won a boat last year. They were escorted out by police. Looks like they will be giving back everything. Seems like their fishing careers are over.

That kind of thing has happened as long as there have been fishing tournaments. In the 80's, i worked for a public utility that sponsored a bass fishing tourney. They caught a couple of guys who had stuck weights and rocks inside their fish to increase the weight. When you consider that all fish had to be alive at weigh in...and released back into the lake afterward...They were permabanned from the tourneys going forward.

Yea. Why isn't the fist weighed first, and then gutted so they can curb the cheeating. That should be mandatory.

Did you miss the part about the fish being released back into the lake afterwards?

Hard to gut a fish then release them back into the lake alive afterwards.

I'd guess the "releasing" part would actually be easier after the "gutting" was complete! (the "alive" part OTOH not so much!)

I bet. Anglers take this stuff seriously, and these assholes had been talking shit while cheating apparently. They will be hounded about this for years, won't be surprised to hear if they pack and leave town. No one will want anything to do with them.

How does this still happen?

I mean...maybe the tourneys coud add a few $ thousands to their costs and have some kind of x-ray machine like they use in airports...throw the fish on the belt, scan them...if they pass, weigh and release .. :rolleyes:

I've seen this story all over the various news sites and thought to myself, "Why the hell is fishing garnering such national attention?"

Then I remembered that I spent a night in a hotel this weekend and watched TV for the first time in a long time and while flipping channels ESPN had "paper airplane throwing" on as an event.

There used to be a guy named Shel, but when pressed on why he was such a crab, he clammed up. He had a real croppy attitude.

What if they just fattened the fish up, by, say, feeding it smaller fish (or whatever it is they eat)?

Both filet and fillet mean a strip of boneless meat. Fillet is the more general term, however, while filet is usually reserved for French cuisine and in the names of French-derived dishes such as filet mignon. Dictionaries list filet as also an American variant of the more general fillet, and American writers are indeed inconsistent on the matter. Some use filet even in contexts unrelated to French cuisine, and some use fillet. The same is true of Canadian writers. Outside North America, fillet is much more heavily favored.
