Rather than purchase a Walmart youngster fishing pole for a 5 year old, are there any other reasonable options? Thanks.

Any kind of small baitcasting rod should be ok. Just don't get one with an open face, as those are too confusing for most adults. :p

What type of fishing are you going to be doing? If it's just off a bank or over the edge of a boat just go with a simply bamboo pole. No reeling, no casting, no line snags.

Wait till the youngster gets a bit older and move up to the more complicated ones.

Just my $.02

well just look around for any cheap rod/ reel combo should be no more then 20 bucks. Something easy to cast that doesn't tangle redily.any more of an investment at 5 yrs old probably not worth it let him wear out a couple of cheepies then if he is still interested buy him a good set.

A rhino reel, and the rod of your choice. Personally, I would go with an RSC2 (look at the website), since the kid's so young. The small reel will be easy for him to handle. The reels are fairly inexpensive, and damn near bulletproof. I have two of the spinning reels (RSP2 & RSP3) myself.

On the other hand, cheap stuff could also discourage him. I agree that he shouldn't spend a fortune, but I would still look for something a little better than the mickey-mouse (litteraly) outfits.
