In that situation, are you safer in the water than staying on the island? If you're not far enough out, I guess you could be thrown onto land.

I tend to think that I'm pretty selective about who (whom?) I would put myself in harm's way to help...and for strangers...I dunno.

However, I know that during my military service, I put myself in danger more than once to help or protect someone I barely knew, or knew not at all...it's just one of the things you do in combat situations.

In a major disaster/crisis like this, I suspect I'd act before thinking of the personal danger...or I'd like to think so anyway. I really don't know anymore.
