Well I just started my first MMORPG game, Runes of Magic.

( Artemus USA server, not even sure if it's PvE or PvP? )

( Seems to be the best free one, very similar to WoW? )

Anyways I am totally a fish out of water playing this genre, I've played every single genre of PC games besides MMORPG's from fps to rts etc, just finished FO3 a couple days ago.

I have no idea what to do, I am just running around with my mage, doing quests here and there, and shooting the bears and mushrooms..... level 9 right now.

Basically I am asking, what's the point?

I have a few friends that plays WoW, but I sure as heck aint paying to play something I have no idea what I am doing.

Never played RoM, but that sounds about right. Just keep doing that until you get a good handle on the game, start playing in groups (Or better yet talk your friends/coworkers into playing) and learn how the game works. There is usually different ways to play a MMORPG. You could also looking into tradeskills and stuff.

Don't bother with crafting too much... Do quests. A lot. At level 9 you should be in Logar, I think. I play on Krynn, so I can't help you besides that. Eventually you will get it.

Grinding, MMORPG is more about community, if you find a bunch of friends to play with tedious gameplay tend to be more fun. But honestly, MMORPGs just don't have any real 'point'.

Depends on the game. Grinding games get old, fast. WoW has at least an end-game progression that makes sense (usually), and the arena can provide for some intense pvp action. I can't speak for other pay to play MMOs though.
