don't be too sure in what you're going to major in. a lot of people change their majors quickly.

it really depends. some classes i had my freshman year were horribly difficult. if you didn't go to the lectures, you were screwed because the tests all came from the professor's lectures (the book did not help at all).

i'd like to mention that i attended a private school, graduated with a 3.992 GPA, and i have to say there's no correlation between academic achievement in college than there is in high school. perhaps it was my major, which had nothing to do with studies i focused on in high school, but i graduated college with a solid B/B+ GPA. it was a rude awakening for me.

a few tips:
* don't come into college thinking it's going to be a breeze. my "orientation" (which officially lasted a week) wasn't over until i got my midterm grades back. i was spending more time having fun with new friends than focusing on work.
* go to class -- at least until the first class or exam. then again, if your professor reads out of the book, you may opt to skip a bit. but you need to determine for yourself what is worthwhile to you and what isn't, and you're not going to know that until you get your first grade.
having 2-3 tests a semester (per class) can do anything and everything to your GPA. be prepared for those tests. don't cram.
* obviously, have fun. but keep in mind that if you want to get by with a high GPA and you have the natural aptitude for it, you don't have to study so hard (you won't know till you take that first test, though). otherwise, focus on your studies but put a necessary balance on your social life too.
