Hey guys, going to get my first vehicle soon. I'm trying to choose between the Mazda 3, the Nissan Frontier, or the Toyota Tacoma. The reason why I'd want a Mazda 3 is for the gas milage and for the practicality of using it in the city. My dad would rather get me a truck because when I go off to college, I'll have more towing capacity to take my stuff as well as it lasting longer since it's a bigger engine. What do you guys think?

Frontier
Tacoma
Mazda 3

I like the Tacoma too, but the Mazda 3 is also nice and will save a lot of money if you drive a lot. I wouldn't buy a truck just because of the moving reason, you can easily rent a truck for that purpose.

I would buy the truck if a. you like trucks a lot more than cars. b. you plan to haul stuff on a regular basis c. you want to got off-roading d. you like being asked, "can I borrow your truck ?" a lot.

I don't understand the part about bigger engine = longer lasting.

That sounds like the opposite of logical :)

[Edit] OP: of those, I like the Tacoma...and trucks do end up being very handy to have around in college.

I own a mazda 3 and love it - but you do realize that it has one of the lowest gas milage of just about all the cars in its category?

I would get the '05 Nissan Frontier. Nissan has a very reliable powertrain and the new 4.0L V6 engine has a lot of power. Nissan also did a very good job with the interior on this truck.

I have 240K+ miles on my 1993 Nissan Pathfinder and it still runs great.

On that note, have you considered the Colorado/Canyon? From what I've read and seen, it seems to be a pretty capable little truck...

Its built right here in Fremont. I like only selective American vehicles. But I dont take to the fact that anything that is japanese is good.

I drove a Canyon around for a week while my Tacoma was out of commission(damn accident). It was a nice ride but it seemed like it was underpowered.

If you decide to get the small truck, get the Tacoma. Toyota trucks last longer, are more reliable, and hold their value better than any other trucks on the road. Period.

More japanese junk.

If what the Japanese automakers sell is "junk", then what the American automakers sell is absolute sh!t. Let's all remember that the American automakers refused to put seatbelts in their cars until Congress forced them to.

The Toyota truck has the long history of reliability. And it's built in Fremont, CA. The Frontier is made in Smyrna, TN. Mazda is owned by Ford.

... "more Japanese junk"... The Japanese build more cars in America than the American automakers do...
