Decided to splurge a little to upgrade my 6 year old PC, technically the video card is not that old, gtx 670.

The upgrades are as follows;

I5 4690k
Asus Z97-A USB3.0 motherboard
Cooler Master Evo 212
Evga gtx 970
LG 55EC9300 1080p oled TV to use as living room TV and monitor

Opinions??

What is your budget and intended usage? Primarily gaming I am assuming. Since you are "splurging", I probably would spring for the 4790k. Higher stock clocks and the extra threads are becoming useful in some games now, and possibly more in the future.

I would go with LGA1151. If you really keep your hardware for 6 years, why not buy the newest stuff.

E.g.
i5-6600K + Z170 Extreme4 + 2x8GB A-DATA 2x8GB DDR4-2400 $440 AR
or
i7-6700K + Z170 VIII Ranger + G.Skill 2x8GB DDR4-3000 $675

EVGA GTX 970 SC, SC+, SSC and FTW are good cards, but currently newegg has Asus GTX 970 Strix for $270 AR.

212 EVO is overrated, I'd get a Thermalright HR-02 Macho or True Spirit 140 instead.

It's probably not a good idea to use a 6 year old power supply for a new rig.

What about the case? Do you already have an SSD?

^ This. Don't buy a 2.5 year old CPU unless you already have a motherboard for it.

SSD is essential, and a modern power supply is a good idea. I just picked up a platinum rated Sparkle/Fortron unit for $25, which would be plenty sufficient for your needs.

Damn seems like all valid points. Guess I will wait. I might wait a little more till I actually have any issues with my current setup :knock on wood:

I don't understand. Why wait? Is the current PC suddenly sufficient for your needs?

The decision to splurge was because of the season, black Friday deals and what not. What I currently have is an i7 950, 16gb ddr3 ram, Asus sabertooth x58 motherboard, seasonic 800w psu, antec 900 case.

If you wanna toy around with your X58, the Sabertooth (one of the best X58 boards) is able to run the 6 core 32nm chips e.g. Xeon X5675, W3680/90, X5690. I've been lucky enough to hit 4.4GHz with my W3690 @ 1.32v Runs super cool too. Some cores are 26*c.

Buy from a server store as much of them have been abused. They are relatively cheap, 100-200$ I invested in 2 since I've been waiting for a better upgrade option. The icing on the cake with these 6 cores is games running DX12 will benefit from the extra cores. People speculate on the performance increases but it will be interesting to see results none the less.

The other option is to unload your board. You could probably get close to 200$ for it.

A 4690k is $210 right now, a 4790k is $300, a 6600k is $255. You already have the DDR3 so that saves money, you could basically get the 4790k for the same price as the 6600k with memory costs. That's a better buy IMO

Sorry for interrupting, but I just wanted to duck into this thread real quick and say thanks to lehtv for his suggestions on a new rig. Bought all of my parts yesterday using his build and saved a ton. I think it's really cool that lehtv, Ken, mfenn and others give out all this top shelf free advice. Not always easy to find. Thanks! <3

Hope your build goes well! If it's the "10/24 Build" you posted here, that is an absolute beast of a $1500 rig. The only downside is it's not actually faster in current games than a ~$1000-1100 rig because you could fit a GTX 970 into a that budget as well, but there's no shortage of quality and it's sure to last a long time before needing an upgrade (apart from the GPU which you'll want to replace in 2-3 years at most).

All your parts should be ok for a while, particularly at 1080p.

You could also upgrade in waves - get the 4790k with new mobo and RAM now, reuse your GPU until the next gen from AMD and Nvidia are released.

So after much back and forth I decided to get the following because I caught them in deals;

i5 6500
MSI Z170A KRAIT GAMING (Refurb)

Now I need some DDR4 ram and a decent cooler(since I read 6500s can now be overclocked) to go with it.

Anybody how much my current config will fetch, i7 950, Asus Sabertooth X58, 4x4GB G.SKILL Sniper Series DDR3 PC3 12800??

Now I need some DDR4 ram and a decent cooler

RAM:
Avexir 2x4GB DDR4-2400 $35 AP
G.Skill Ripjaws V DDR4-2400 $45
Patriot Viper 4 DDR4-2800 1.2V $58

Given that you went with a locked CPU and a refurb board, I think the cheapest kit makes the most sense.

Cooler: 212 EVO $20 AR. Plenty for a moderate OC - Skylake doesn't run that hot. Should do 4.5GHz on a 6600K, as long as stability testing is done with some realistically stressful program, like OCN x264 stability test. Temps would probably be an issue in Prime95 or IBTv2 at 4.5GHz, probably not at 4.3-4.4.

(since I read 6500s can now be overclocked)

I don't think MSI has updated their BIOSes to support BCLK overclocking on locked CPUs, but hopefully they will do.
