I got a First Union Check Card now. You can use it in stores, gas stations, etc that accept Visa for no charge, and it's deducted out of my bank account. I'm wondering if this card will work online, but I don't want to try it (waste of $$$). Who has one?

It's me, Isla.

Don't ask.

Sure, you can use it, but it isn't recommended. If a e-thief gets hold of it, they can wipe out your account and you will be SOL.

Use something besides your check card on-line!

Isla's right. A credit card is limited to liability to something like $50 while a debit card is not. If someone got ahold of your debit card number, they will clean the account out. If you have to do on line transactions, I think the best situation is to use a low limit (300 to 500 dollars)card. That way, you can limit your risk.

Actually, I have this very card and last year some felon got my card number and the numbers of numerous other cardholders and purchased a lot of computer equipement. A call to my bank was all that was necessary, though I also called the merchant in California who agreed not to contest it. The guy who stole the info is now in prison somewhere in California. I suffered no losses, just a few minutes of near hysterical panic since it was about one grand. Since then I have had no problems. The secure sites have improved significantly this past year as well. I'm not concerned.

That's good to hear, chess...

I've used mine on-line before and then read an article saying that it wasn't a good idea... so I hope you are right!

Sorry to hear about what you had to deal with. Even tho' it turned out okay, that kind of thing is always upsetting!

Isla:

You must be one of the nicest human beings on this planet. You always have the most upbeat and pleasant comments. I'd say your husband and children are very lucky to have you around. :p
