First time wireless adapter user -- am I clueless?

I've just spent three hours trying to use a Buffalo wireless notebook adapter with a Compaq Presario laptop. Not only is this the first time I've tried to use wireless, it is the first time I've used any pc card. Either I'm clueless, or something is squirrely about this card.

I've gotten it to work, briefly, three times. And then the laptop locks up. I reboot, and the power light on the wireless card does not come on. I take it out, reinsert it, and still no power light. Device manager doesn't even see the card. I do numerous things, and then all of a sudden I'm inserting the card and the power light lights up, and it works.

Is this symptomatic of anything other than a bad connection?

One thing that I am unclear on: can I leave the card in the slot when powering down or putting the system in hibernation mode, or am I supposed to power up without the card in the slot, and then insert it after powered up? (If that sounds like a weird question, there is something in the installation procedures to actually suggest the case.)

I'm ready to take the card back to compusa, but I'd like to rule out any possibility that the problem is a clueless user. I'll also take it back, with my laptop, so I can demonstrate the problem. But if I am clueless, and can fix it with a little help from the forum, all the better.

Sounds like a faulty card - it shouldn't lock your laptop up for one, and it should power on when you reboot it.

You can leave the card in there 24/7; however, it's best if you take it out when you go mobile with your laptop, ie, take it to work/school, in order to avoid damaging it just in case something hits your laptop bag.

You don't sound clueless at all - I've been there with a faulty wireless card on my first wireless experience. It's a hair pulling experience :)

It does look like it was a defective card. I replaced it yesterday. Haven't had a lot of time to play with the new one, but what I've done seems to work okay.
