First Time Win 7 Install

Just d/l my 7 pro copy and will probably use it on my main comp once the rest of my pieces arrive to upgrade the hardware. Is there anything special things to know about doing a 7 install new/different from xp/vista?

Nope; It's the same. Insert disc, press next a bunch, and done.

Probably the easiest install you'll ever do. The first time I installed windows 7, I was impressed at the short amount of time it took and how i didn't have to load any drivers right away.

For the most part, very easy install.

If you want an even faster install, look into installing from a boot USB stick.

I've seen some people mention that about a usb install. I have the disc as iso format, what's a good link to read about doing a usb install.

Just follow the steps here and get something to mount the .iso like daemon tools lite to show the .iso as another drive

works pretty good just one addition to the step 7, should do it as bootsect /NT60 X: /FORCE (X: is the drive letter of the flash drive)

Just have to add force to the end, I have had some flash drives not take it unless forced.

*edit* only can do it from another machine that is already running vista or win 7, as xp does not have the same tools

MS made Windows 7 so any kids can install it on their computers. Unfortunately they didn't make it complicated. Less job for Computer Technicians... bad thing.

TIP: Be sure to wipe out the hard drive and do a clean install of OS. Do not install over the exsisting OS or upgrade. This is to re-gain system performance.

Lastly, I suggest you avoid using Windows 7. Get the Server 2003, the king of operating systems. King of the hills.

Also, unplug any hard drives other than the drive you want to use as the system drive during the install. 7 likes to put stuff everywhere...

Might want to find a credible torrent and get the SP1 version of Windows 7 if you already don't have it. Saves you time and probably would make for a cleaner install.

Still had a couple lingering problems from a mostly resolved software conflict I had, so I transferred what stuff I hadn't backed up yet to the external and decided to give win7 a try before the rest of the parts arrive for the retool.

using the ms usb tool was pretty easy, not very fast but didn't take much action on my part. found out after install the iso was sp1 so had very few post install updates waiting.

only minor hiccup I came across was that in the boot select with the usb drive in, I selected removable devices the first couple of times, and when not finding one it rebooted. when I decided to look through other options I saw the usb under HDDs and installed from there.

at least now I can spend a couple days trying to figure out all the personal choice options as I had my vista looking mostly like XP and wouldn't mind keeping the feel.

Having played around a bit with 7 on my primary, there seems to be enough minor improvements along with better ssd handling that I'm thinking about getting another copy. Now my question is, when I go and pay the $30 for another copy of professional, do I actually need to d/l it or will just having the key be sufficient since I already have a usb drive setup up?

The new product key should work with your current USB installation media.

Windows wise yes,but not as easy or fast as Ubuntu on Linux .

And Ubuntu is one of the worst of the Linuxes, completely unintuitive and has less options than are available by using key combinations hidden in files not even meant for users.
