First Time Using a Razor to Shave

I've always used an electric shavor since I started to shave. But it just so happened that I left it at home and couldn't shave at the dorms. So I went ahead and bought a Mach3 Turbo and shaving cream for the first time. This morning I have my first shave with a razor. WOWZERS! It's so much smoothier! I love it! I think i'm going to stay on this for a while 🙂

I lost my electric shaver last week so I just got a razor for the first time too! 😀 I agree, it's a lot nicer, but way more inconvenient 🙁

I started with the Mach 3 and bought electric. I would rather not buy blades every couple of weeks. It's not as close a shave, but it's good enough for me.

yeah it is a lot more inconvenient. About 30 seconds as opposed to 15 min -_- o well, i think it was worth it!

But you can't shave while tying your necktie while driving in the car on the way to work with a mach 3, and thus you will never be the subject of a 1950's style movie starring whoever the modern day equivalent of jimmy stewart is.

Give it month or two, that 15 min will be down to about 3-5 min. Mach 3 Turbos are the sh!t.

Only after shaving for an hour with it. I don't know how anyone can think electrics take 30 seconds. In 30 seconds you look like a monkey shaved you, unless you are 14 and only grow 3 hairs on your face.

15 mins? 😕 Did you shave your legs and chest also? j/k

Just get some more practice and it shouldn't take more than 3 minutes.

Depends on whats going on that day. If I'm just going to work with nothing planned for the day I'll use electric. But if I'm going out & meeting the ladies I use the gilette fusion I bought a few months ago.

Loke ;
You can purchase a cheapo straight razor here but I would not recommend it, a decent quality straight razor will set you back at least $200, anything cheaper will not give you the shave you are looking for and it will cause skin irritation.
I bought mine back in the late seventies, back then it cost me $150, it is the top of the line, razor, strap (for sharpening),brush (real camel hair) and case.
My razor was made from surgical stainless steel, after all these years it still looks and performs like new,one word of caution, it takes some practice to learn how to properly sharpen and use these types of blades and never and I mean never rush when shaving, you can seriously cut yourself and cause a major wound, but, no other blade on the market can even come close to the shave you get with one of these.

You have taken the FIRST step and switched to a blade.

Now get yourself a good "fogproof" shower mirror (I prefer one with a radio) and get the full experience of timesavings - shaving while in the shower!

How does that save time? Unless you have 4 arms you have to stop other shower activities. The only advantage is that you can rinse quickly afterwards.

Honest question, why does what the brush is made out of make a difference? It is just to 'whip' up the shaving cream is it not? Ive seem people make reference to camel and badger brushes, why are those better than say a synthetic plastic brush?

i tried to use the electric style shavers but ended up having to finish with a razor anyways, not to mention it burned my face.

With a razor you are looking at a close shave, but over the period of the week my face would become very irritated. With an electric I can get out of the shower, take a minute to get a good shave and I have practically no irritation for the rest of the day.

With a razor, my face felt raw around thursday or friday. At the time I used a gilette double balded razor, can't recall the name. Maybe I just need more pre and post shave work advice. 🙂

My Mach 3 has always worked for me. I shave usually twice a week. One blade per month. (give or take)

I was just reading an article in the local paper about local barbershops who offer other services besides just cutting hair. Found out there are still two places who offer shaves with a straight razor. I might have to stop in one of these times just for the experience. No way I would try that myself.

It's the combination of various factors including how well they absorb water (not too little, not too much), how they feel on the face (not too soft, not too firm), how durable they are (want them to last a while), etc.
