I have an existing f1.8 50mm. If you reverse the lens to the body, you can actually do some acceptable macro shots.

Just took a few in my backyard:

Reverse the lens to the body? How does that work?

Nice shots, btw.

Yea, lens are essentially just bunch of glasses. Just so happens some lenses can provide more zoom when looked the other way.

The camera will lose any electronic communication with the lens, so I just hand-held the lens in front of the body (and the sensor inside). And shot pictures in full manual mode.

More info here.

Hm. I may invest $9 for that reverse-mounting ring afterall. Freakin' thieves.. $9 for a plastic ring.

Pretty nice, I thought you were going to show us microscopic photography of your belly button lint or something though.

I am disappoint.

Very nice! I love macro photography but you have such a tiny depth of field. Makes it challenging to get truly great shots.

Love the vivid yellows in the first pic though.

Aging XTi.

Same SLR I still use with a 18-55mm and 55-250 mm IS. Was thinking of getting upgrade for a 11 year old camera like a 4Ti/5Ti for 1080i video.
But it still does take amazing photos. Looks like I'll have to get those reverse mount adapters and try macro photography.

Any reason not just to use the lens normally?

It's not a macro lens. To do macro photography using a lens normally he would need to buy a macro lens, and then Alton Brown would show up in his nightmares and berate him for buying a uni-tasker.

Nice shots. The low DOF bothers me though, but I know it was on purpose in the first one at least.

Where is Wallydraigle when you need him? :p

You can't change the DOF after reversing a lens, everything is in manual mode. However, you can set the DOF with the lens on the normal way, turn the camera off, reverse the lens and it will retain the DOF last set.

OP, can you try taking macros with a deeper DOF? Maybe after you receive the plastic ring that makes it easier?

The pics came out awesome though. The first pic looks firey. Like a firey explosion of life. Reminds me of the big bang.

I'm amazed at how you even were able to get the 2nd pic at all. Not being a proper macro lens, you cannot put much distance between you and the subject. How were you able to get so close without that fighter jet of insects scrambling away?

You can increase DOF by doing focus stacking ... basically taking many photos at different focus points then combining them so that the in focus areas of each shot is used and the OOF areas are discarded.

Those are great, especially that dragonfly. I haven't had any kind of luck with insects with the various macro hacks.

I really like the first one. The way the pollen almost glitters off the lilies filament is very pretty. All of them are very well done though especially for your first time at macro.

Well, yea. This assumes the subject isn't moving and I have a tripod. First time I learned these shots are stupid hard to take because even the SLIGHTEST breeze makes everything move around so much, since it's so zoomed in.

Nice pics. Yeah I just totally lucked out with the dragon fly. All these macro shots have amazing insect pics. Just when I was wishing for them, I found a little dragon fly 'den' where they were all resting.

Wow, pretty amazing. I had no idea you could do that. Nice work.
