......... and i kinda liked it and my kids. Our friend spent the night at our house and brought his x-box console. I'm not a big fan of game consoles but my kids loved it. Now, my kids want me to buy one.

here's the Q: Is it better than PS2? my friend told me that it plays dvd movies but don't have memory (unlike x-box). Also, he said the 2 must have games are Halo and Splinter Cell (for grown-ups maybe).

TIA for the inputs!

I have an Xbox. If you want to play DVDs you need to buy the DVD pack (a remote control). But you save lots of money on memory cards. Cross platform games are always better on Xbox than they are on Gamecube or PS2. Xbox is unmatched for FPS games and online play.

Is it better than PS2 is an objective question. It just depends really. You'll have fans of both systems trying to push their respective systems towards you. I have no regrets about buying an XBox (traded in my Gamecube for it) but that's just me. BB rents the systems for iirc 20-30 (not including games however) - you may want to try that or find a friend with a PS2 as well and see how that is if you're debating between the two. But otherwise it's a great system that plays DVDs also.

It's good that you like your kids...

Anyways, PS2 is a dying console so XBox, along with Gamecube, are very good choices. If you have broadband try that live thing.

Uhhh.. The PS2 is most certainly not a dying console. I'm not a PS2 owner, nor a Sony fanboy. When I heard the specs of Xbox and Gamecube, I thought they would finish off the weaker PS2 easily. But the PS2 is doing quite well, and will continue to do quite well due to Sony's clever business practices that have led to lots of developer support.

The PS2 is definetly not dying as I think it is outselling the XBox and Gamecube and has a much larger user base; however, you hear a lot more about the XBox and GC more so than the PS2 a lot of times. For online play XBox's Live service is much better than the PS2's. (The GC's is non existant)

xbox intarweb > ps2 intarweb ... CONFIRMED
xbox hardware > ps2 hardware ... CONFIRMED
xbox games > ps2 games ... based on your personal preferences.
xbox graphics (all xbox games are progressive scan) > ps2 graphics ... CONFIRMED

But in the long run, xbox is the way to go. You can mod it and install a bigger harddrive and linux and play divx stuff. It can also serve as a "cd Juke box" (6 gb of mp3s), and you don't need to buy a multitap for 4 player action.

Get a GameCube. There are already great games out for it and still more to be released.
Already out:
Metroid Prime
Zelda: Wind Waker
Mario Sunshine
Rogue Leader
Pikmin
Super Monkey Ball 1&2
Eternal Darkness
Resident Evil Rebirth
Resident Evil Zero
Skies Of Arcadia Legends

Upcoming games:
Geist
F-zero GX
Zelda: WW 2
Billy Hatcher
Viewtiful Joe
Resident Evil 4
Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes

Of course, Xbox is also a great system and when I get one I plan to pick up these gems:
Halo(Duh)
Splinter Cell
Shenmue 2
Panzer Dragoon Orta
House Of The Dead 3

Can't think of any more at the moment. Both are great systems, but I honestly believe that the Gamecube has(or will have) a much stronger lineup of AAA titles than the Xbox. Your choice though.

how can you leave Super Smash off your gamecube list?

Anyways, I just got an xbox about 2 weeks ago. I have Halo, NBA Street Vol 2, Mechassault, Dead or Alive 3, and Project Gotham Racing. I enjoy all the games, the graphics on dead or alive 3 are simply amazing. I bought a PS2 a year ago to play FFX, sold it soon as I was done with that. I played GT3 a couple times and some other games but the graphics are pretty crappy compared to PC's and Xbox. Unless you really want the PS2 exclusive games, get an xbox

XBOX + mod + bigger HD > everything.

What else can you play graphically superior kick ass games, divx, xvid, svcd, vcd, dvd, mpg, and mp3's on. All from the same unit. (other than your pc)

I still feel it is a matter of preference for all 3 systems.

I don't feel that any 1 system will die out before the next generation comes in 2005.

If you love GTA or FF, get a PS2 because I don't think we will see either of those series of games on the Xbox any time soon. I bought an Xbox at launch and I hate those games so I am missing nothing. The Xbox seems to have every genre covered except RPGs (the genre that I don't like).

How old are your kids? You could pick up a Cube, and get them into the classics like Mario, Metroid, and Zelda.

X-Box is a cool console, but there just aren't that many games that really interest me besides Halo. Panzer Dragoon Orta looks cool, and there are several other titles that have potential, but I do love my Gamecube.

Single player=PS2 kind of
Multi player=XBOX
Both=xbox
graphics=xbox
fps=xbox
online=xbox
controller=xbox

And I find you can play the games more on xbox. The ps2 is just repetitive and has horrible graphics. Plus they break (I currently have 2 in my closet that both are teh suck)

I think PS2 is definately losing momentum, i work at a retail store and sony keeps trying to push the PS2. they realsed two new packages, one broadband rady, and the other with dvd remote a game and soemthing else with the console. neither have sold very well.

With that said the way the Xbox is designed is actually better for developers( one reason being able to assign the memory to do diff tasks). and microsoft is huge and wants to win so they will do their best to do so. Sony is also not small and is pushing forward the launch date of the PS3. as for game cube it just seems more kid oriented.

One plus for PS2 is EA said they would make online versions availiable only for PS2. i dont think it will last long since xbox live is so much better. and mods are big on xbox.

NOT EVEN CLOSE. Gamecube/PS2 controllers are superior to that bulky, made for the non-average, huge person. And WTF is up with that humongous X-Box logo on that thing. It's disgusting!

Honestly don't worry about the graphics because graphics do not make a game fun, look at the games that you can play on each console.

Xbox has its strong points in sports and fps. I believe the ea sports line is a little stripped on the xbox console because ea doesn't put online play on it's xbox games (please correct me if I am wrong). The sega sports line gets better every year so its a good alternative to ea's. Xbox also has a nice racing collection. If you are only going to play games that are multiplatform then I would recommend the xbox because in this specific case yes the graphics would matter since that would be the main thing differentiating the consoles.

Gamecube has its appeal in party play and nice exclusive games. I find the gamecube to be great when you have friends and family who come over because it has games which are appealing to young, old, male, and female such as super monkey ball and smash bro's melee to name a few. Its exclusive game content is very nice it has metroid and zelda to name a few.

PS2 has two things that stand out to me rpgs and gran turismo :) If you want to play japanese style rpgs then you have to get the ps2 because the xbox and gamecube don't have the selection in good rpgs as does the ps2. Also the ps2 does have the largest library, but honestly don't worry about the size of the libraries because each console has a large library of games to play. The ps2 also does action/platform games well, it has games such as devil may cry and metal gear solid 2 (wasn't multi for a while).

The best thing to do is to talk to your kids, find out what types of games they like to play and think about what games you like to play. Then look at the available libraries of each console and find one that meets your wants. But again remember that graphics do not make a game fun.

He's talking about the S-controller, which is now standard, not the original "Duke" model.

Here's the ultimate testimonial for Xbox...

Last time I visited my folks in OH, I took my Xbox with me.
My mother (who is in her late 50s) got TOTALLY HOOKED on Halo!

Mind you, this is a woman who can barely use a computer, and who has never wanted to play any video games of any kind (not even the good old Atari 2600 I had as a kid).

She was spotting Covenant for me, telling me where to toss grenades and concentrate fire.
She didn't go as far as to play co-op with me...but when I was leaving, as we were huggin goodbye, she said:

You know, I wish you weren't leaving because I really want to play that game some. :D

BTW: She's driving down tomorrow to visit for a week. I've already got everything hooked up, because we've already set aside an evening to play some co-op Halo! :cool:

BTW2: I have to borrow Halo from a buddy tho. I traded it in, along with a bunch of other games, for a used copy of Steel Battalion. Haven't yet picked up another copy for myself.

um, what crack are you smoking? The original XBox controller is far superior to the puny PS2/GC/XBox-S controller. You're in the minority if you have small hands :p
