Hi all. Iv'e been lurching around the forums for a few weeks now and have finally decided to join. This x-mas im going to make my first attempt at building a pc. Heres a list of what im planning on getting.

1.1 Ghz T-bird
128MB Mushkin High Perf REV2 PC133 222
VisionTek Geforce2 GTS (32mb)
Asus A7V or MSi K7TPro2A ?? (any other suggestions?)
GlobalWin FOP32-1 fan
Antec SX830....................I already have a hard drive,monitor,etc....How does this system sound? I could use some opinions on a motherboard and a good fan(one thats not to loud, but effective) One last question,is there a big dif.. in preformance between the 1ghz and 1.1ghz t-birds? If not i'd really like to save the 90$ to get something else. TIA

I got the Asus and i'm happy. I don't know, i think you'll get a good bard wither way. And yeah, that's not worth 90 bucks, you'll get more out of an extra stick of ram than 100mhz more on the t'bird

Thanks for the quick reply. Good idea on how to spend the extra money. Would it be ok to mix to diff. kinds of pc133 ram? Thanks.

generally, but if you overclock one may not hit as high a clockrate as the other and hold your system back... If possible use the same to overclock. Otherwise, mix, shouldn't hurt it.

I agree with the others on spending the $90. on additional name brand RAM. Your video card will be your biggest bottleneck regardless.

I'm gonna go w/ the memory idea. By getting the Msi instead of the asus,i'll be saving even more money. I think i'll get 256mb of the mushkin high pref. pc133. Should i get 1x256,or 2x128? I know im asking alot of questions, but this is my first time, and i do want to get things right. Thanks.

Lance:
Though some my differ I Prefer 2 sticks rather than 1, my reasoning is that if you loose 1 chip on a 256 you have lost the whole thing if you loose 1 chip using 2 128's you still have a machine that will run. It is kinda like haveing a spare tire.

I too would go for 2 sticks of 128mb unless the single stick of 256mb is cheaper, which it shouldn't be usually.

There are 2 ways you can look at it
1) what someone said: just incase something happens to the 256mb stick, youll loose it ll at once, with 2x128.you wont loose it all at once.
2)By going 256, you are freeing up more dimm slots so you may add future pc133 sticks in there. eg. A friend has a space stick lying around and offers to give it to you. The extra dimm may come in handy.

If it were me, I'd go with option #1, like everyone else says.

90 bux can go a long ways my friend!
