First time reciever of UPS package - is this wierd?

Ok, so I ordered a new case from Tiger Direct the other day, and they ship via UPS. I'm away for most of the day, and my sis was home when they delivered.

I got home from work and there was my package, but when the driver came my sis was asleep and only got to the door just as the driver was almost back to his truck.
I guess he heard the door open, turned and said, "Oh, package for you."

He had left my case sitting on the front porch. It's not like I live in a bad neighbourhood and who would steal a computer case but I thought that UPS required that somebody sign that the package had been delivered? IE. a neighbour if I wasn't home.

Is this out of the ordinary or is this a standard practise.

It's standard practice, unless the shipper specifically requires that someone signs for it. If the shipper doesn't do that, it's the driver's call as to whether to leave it there or not.

UPS doesn't make you sign unless the sender said so. fed ex makes you sign unless you signed their "leave it" waiver at some point.

I've had packages from USPS, UPS, FEDEX, Staples, OfficeMax and Office Depot all left on the door step. I guess they'll do it until the first package goes missing.

i always thought that UPS always asks for a signature. at least in my area... they will not leave it at ur doorstep unless u specifically tell them to do so on the info notice. fed-ex, on the other hand, they will leave stuff on my doorstep unless the sender specifically asks for signature confirmation. i guess this might depend on what area u live in too?

I hate when you need to sign for something from UPS and they have to keep coming back 3 times. I've had packages where you wait, wait, grab quick shower, missed them. I've been tempted to call them up and ask them to Purolator it over, since Purolator has a pickup location near by.
