First time overclocking

I'm using a hyper 212 evo cooler. The rest of the specs are in my sig.

I was able to get up to 4.2ghz with a additional turbo voltage set to +.0816 and cpu offset of +.005. Ran prime 95 for 20 minutes and it was fine. Bumping to a multiplier of 43 the pc gets the Windows 8.1 blue screen about 12 minutes into prime 95 test.

I hear people can get up to 4.5ghz easily. I'm not sure what esle I need to do. I followed the overclock guide for asrock on oc.net.

Should I dial back additional turbo voltage to default of .004 and run it at 4.2ghz for good? I raised the turbo voltage since the guide suggests if you increase multipliar and prime 95 test fails for 5 minutes you should dial the turbo up or decrease multipliar.

I just want a good stable oc to use all around. Figured there could be people here with the asrock extreme3 gen 3 board that have overclocked before. I'm running the latest bios and Intel chip drivers too.

First time overclocking? On a 2500K? Chips ability to clock degrades over time, so a used/abused 2500K only hitting 4.2 is pretty good actually.

Yea I built the pc at the end of 2011. The guide I was following was kind of hard to understand but I followed it closely so I wasn't sure what was optimum or not or if there were other settings I needed to mess with. It only stated increase turbo or decrease multipliar. Also prime 95 doesn't show me errors. How do I know when I reach max voltage or max vcore? Win 8.1 just blue screens with a wha_uncorrectable error.

Try 0.010 offset and 4.4GHz (44 multiplier). No need for additional turbo voltage since turbo should be disabled.

Ok cool I'll try that and disable the Intel turbo setting. Gonna leave everything stock except change the multipliar and voltage offset.

If that doesn't work I'll follow the guide on oc.net and go with the green overclock method and I guess just leave it at 4.2ghz.

Wanted to oc since it won't be worth replacing parts until 8 months or so from now.

4270 posts and first time overclocking ?

I'm a bit skeptical but.

Never needed to until I saw the requirements for watch dogs and took a look at upgrades and I realized there would not be a need upgrade to anything right now. I want to get a 290x but they are pricy now and new tech will be coming so it will make more sense waiting.

Yeah I have a X5650 on the way myself atm to up mine a bit and a ASUS DCII TOP 280x I snagged before the farmer price increased em OC'd pretty nice.

Coin miners have driven anything AMD oriented up awhile now but they are strting to stabilize a bit.

The Green team 770 look pretty good atm money wise.

Yea I didn't realize the bitcoin deal screwed stuff up until I read some articles. I saw that the 770 and 780 were what I was going to spend max dollar amount on if I were to upgrade. I just hope when I do upgrade I won't need to build a new pc lol.
