Good morning everyone,

I've been a long time lurker, using this site for years to keep up with new computer technology and to research all purchases/upgrades for myself and my family. As I've gained more knowledge about computers I've attempted to expand my comfort zone in the realms of hardware and software. Now im feeling the urge to learn how to overclock.

Disclaimer: I have never overclocked anything in my life. This will be a new learning experience. Please be gentle.

When the i7 chips go on sale later this month and quad core prices drop (hopefully) I will be building a new machine that I plan on overclocking. I would like to learn how to properly overclock on a test machine before attempting to overclock a brand new build.

My test machine I will be using is an older Alienware Aurora 5500
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 4000+ San Diego chip
Motherboard: Asus A8N-SLI nForce4 chipset
Ram: 2 1g Patriot pc3200 ddr-sram at 2.5 3 2 5
Cooling: Alienware liquid cooling system

Everything is running at stock speeds, and yes I know this is a crime to some of you.

The GPU in this pc is an ancient 7800 GTX

What I would like to do is overclock the cpu for better performance then upgrade the gpu to possibly a 8800 GT to allow this older machine to run World of Warcraft better than it is currently able. Once I build my new pc I'd like to give this older pc to a family member as a gift to use as a box just for WoW.

Does anyone with experience overclocking an old 4000+ know where I should start? Or possibly what a set of stable settings are to use with my hardware?

Any input is greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read my post.
