Hi there, this will be my first time overclocking, and i've read quite a bit and understand the basic concept, but i'd like some more concrete values pertaining to my situation.

i7 860 @ 2.8ghz
Hyper 212 EVO

I'm looking to get around 3.2-3.4, which I've read is very doable given decent cooling. I've seen people with Hyper 212 EVOs readh 4.0 but i'm not really looking to do that, I still like my computer semi quiet.

I have a Gigabyte P55 board, what values should I be looking at for all the tweaks? Thanks!

Forgot to add, my CPU idles around 40 right now, 60 under stress, 70 under long periods of stress. It is quite hot in my room, and it was about 7-9C cooler during winter.

What Case is this in?

What are your room temps?

You will be able to hit 3.2-3.4 on stock vcore and the cooling looks good.

I have the same CPU (albeit on an ASUS P55-based board), which I have overclocked to somewhere in the 3.3-3.5GHz range. From memory, I brought up the BCLK to 157-159 and reduced my RAM multiplier one step down (so that the resultant frequency stays under its rated max of 1600MHz).

I also enabled CPU voltage offset which allows dynamic clocking of the CPU (low GHz at idle, turbo speed into the 4GHz range at load).

I would have gone higher on my OC if only this Offset setting does not cause a crash during Windows start-up (presumably caused by overaggressive Turbo mode). Since I don't want the CPU to run at full speed at idle times (hence Offset mode), I have to make do with this relatively low OC. I'd be interested to know if there is a way to achieve higher OC with Offset mode enabled.

Regards.

Thanks for the tips guys, since this is my first time ever OCing some screenshots of the BIOS screen that i'm tampering with would be very helpful.

I think with the Hyper212 EVO I should be able to get 3.5ghz stable, yes?

If that's the case, could someone with a Gigabyte P55 mobo help me out with some screenshots? Thanks!

My case is a cooler master HAF 932 full tower, room temps are around 75-80F in the summer, about 65-70F in the winter.

Cooling shouldn't be an issue. I would think you could easily get 3.7Ghz before things get more tricky.

Does your board have any auto overclocks? If so, you can let it do its thing and see what settings are changed. You can then set it back and manually change.

Most likely you will change the multiplier on the CPU first.

Overclocking is not a matter of 'Put these settings in and your ready to go'. You will need to review threads on overclocking, both in general and specifically for Nehalem chips. This will give you the knowledge needed to adjust the necessary settings and to test them to ensure stability and reliability.
