First time OCing - is there such thing as Prime / memtest stable but not game stable?

Hey all,

This is my evry first time overclocking on any machine, so I thanks for your patience and support in advance.

My goal for this processor was 2.7ghz, which I believe to be EASILY achievable, given that a lot of people have hit it at stock cooling / voltages. I have a Thermaltake Venus12 running and unfortunately, I needed to raise the voltage to 1.58v or so to keep it stable at 2.7. (11.5 x 235, running memory divider at 166 for mem frequency of 195mz) HT set to 4x.

On this setup, my CPU idles at 44 and hits load at around 53. It ran through memtest for 2 hours fine, and Prime 95 for 8 hours with no problem.

Unfortunately, I am now noticing intermittent crashes in Warcraft 3 with this setup...perhaps once every 6 games or so. This is of course frustrating because it is not easily reproducible and I had thought Prime would throw everything at this CPU that it could handle.

I was hoping for general thoughts or comments or advice. Why did I need such a huge (14%!) voltage boost to hit 2.7? Is leaving the voltage at 1.58 a little too dangerous, or is it ok? (I can't seem to fine consensus on this...some think 1.55+ is too much for Venice, while others have no problems at 1.6v+)

Another thought I had was to try to run memory at 1:1 and overclock as much as I can. The stock multiplier of 12 though means that my Corsair would have to run at 450mhz. If I were to do this, would going above 2.7v for the memory be advisable, or loosening the timings?

In the interest of performance, is it advisable then to keep dropping down until I can get Warcraft 3 stable? (I havent tried many other games, I am thinking that newer games might be even more demanding and thus crash it faster).

I hope that being OCD is considered normal, but my heart breaks every time I crash and I am forced to lower the clock / voltages. Maybe someone can reassure me that going from 2.4 to 2.6 or 2.65 is considered decent on this processor, and I didn't get a runt?

Yes, there is

read amd64oc.blogspot.com, there I have mentioned the software need for testing and whether something maybe prime stable but game failed.
 
ive had game stable and not prime stable...im sure there could be but i dont know of many ways...after all when you test from prime you are putting 100% stress on your cpu...and i dont know of a game out that even comes close to doing that
 
my system was prime stable for 7h 58min but failed 3d mark 06 and 05 within minutes, hd to bump the voltage up, after that it failed a game demo and i had to again bump the voltage up.
 
my system is BY FAR the strangest (can be seen in this thread)....prime 95: 36 hours stable and memtest: 24hours stable BUT the system crashes randomly during idle and not while gaming, crashes stop if everything is revert backed to normal, note that i'm still testing right now for stability
 
I don't think that you should use multiplier as 9.5,10.5,11.5 etc, though I am not fully sure, but they are not advised.

Unkno, if you're unwilling to try any of the suggestions that the peope with more experience than you are willing to give you, you really should just stop bringing the subject up.😉

Ok, here's an update.

1.58v, 2.7ghz at 11 x 246. Memory runing at 200mhz w divider.

Small FFTs on Prime ran for 9 hours, 26 minutes, then errored out. Stable or no?
And temperatures hovered around 53c at load.

sometimes its your memory divider that cuasing issues even if memory clocks is not too high.

ps your proc is 90 nm right ? if so your temps are through the roof. get some AS ceramic and re position the heatsink.

my dual core opty 165 at 2.550 GHz loads at 44 and idels at 25.

actually, i've been trying all of the suggestions that people brought up.....but it actually takes some time to determine if it's stable at idle (maybe a week for each sugguestion since before, it usually crashes once every 4 days and sometimes just randomly once a week or two). I am currently using your suggestion, which was to increase the vDimm and so far it's been pretty stable, hopefully it doesn't blue screen (it's been exactly one week, and i'm planning on letting it run idle for a little more while until i confirm it's stable and post an update)...To tanishalfelf and akshayt: i'm already running a zalman CNPS9500 and i'm fairly sure that the temp sensors are off by like 7 degrees, since at idle AND load, the base of the heatsink is cold during idle and only a little bit warm during load (used AS5)




sorry if i kinda jacked your thread, warbean, but here's some advice:
IMO, 1.58V is kinda high.....try if you can get it to like 2.6ghz at a lower voltage; the difference in speed should be minimal. See how high of an overclock you can get with a 1.5V. And, I would try to get at least 12 hours of prime95 stable, if something fails, it's not stable. Btw, as mentioned before, try not to use .5 multipliers.
