Yuck!

Someone was passing around a menu today at work, to pick us up lunch... I decided to try something I didn't have before, and got the limburger sandwich. I googled it real quick to make sure it was what I thought it was - a pungent cheese.

I thought it was going to be toasted, but it was on rye bread with raw onions. I got through one half of the sandwich. The combination of flavors just made it taste somewhat rotten. I decided to forego the second half, and maybe eat just the cheese. I smelled the cheese and it smells just like the toejam I scrape out under my toenails!!!! :(

Next time I'll stick with a normal grilled cheese sandwich.

Sounds like a sandwich made so old people can taste it.

limburger is good in small doses with other cheeses.

Oh, now I understand, it's from Wisconsin.

Traditional Limburger Sandwich
From Wisconsin's Hometown Flavors (Prairie Oak Press, 1998)

Makes any number of servings

rye bread (dark or light, pumpernickel, sauerkraut rye, etc.)
mustard (sweet-hot, brown, whole grain, etc.)
sliced limburger
thick slices of sweet onion

Layer the ingredients as you like into a sandwich. Myron Olson, manager of the Chalet Cheese Company in Monroe, prefers sweet-hot mustard on one slice of bread and mayonnaise on the other. Then, as he recommends, "Wash it down with a beer!"
