First Time Laptop Buyer

I'm looking to buy a decent portable laptop for school. It's my first time buying one and since alot of you guys have experience, I was hoping you could point me in the right direction.

It's mostly gonna get some powerpoint and word abuse...maybe an occaisional wireless internet explorer session if my class is going too slow. If you guys know of a good equal to or sub 14" and sub 5lb under $1400 i'd appreciate any reccommendations.

Basically it's just for notes that i can bring to class and to the library. I have a power hungry desktop that'll eat all my gaming needs but the laptop would be all work so no real concern as to the video performance it can put out.

The thinkpad is what i want but i just can't dish out the money for an X series. Was wondering if Dell, Toshiba, etc. any of them can fit the need. Appreciate any help you guys can give me. Thanks

Some IBM's seem to be within your -->budget
But let me warn you so that you are warned, once you go IBM there is no going back it's kind of addicitve, not addictive as in ****** iPod addictive, but more like BMW addictive 😀

You may want to consider a Dell 710m...its a 12.1" display at about 4 lbs and well within(under) your budget, about $900 on sale at dell now. Wipe your mind clear of the name IBM...Lenovo bought there laptop division and IBM has no part of the design or manufacture of laptops. That having been said the Lenovo line is excellent if not a tad expensive.

He knows what he's talking about.

When you buy IBM/Lenovo, you pay for quality, durability, and warranty. That is, you do pay a bit more than Dell, but you certainly get more in terms of service and support (but less performance-wise).

Top notch, either choice. (Well, not really Dell, but... 😉)

Do you need a built-in optical drive? If not, and if top performance isn't too important, take a look at the Dell Latitude X1. Far under 5lb (2.5lb), 12" widescreen, and 3 year warranty for $1250.
