Geez, you can't let them have lack of saftey get in the way of revenue collection...

speed limit is based on the geometry of the road and average driver reaction time

its based on speed surveys yo

Don't forget that speed limits are based on both those, but also the asinine lobbying by dumbass 'can't make it slow enough' overprotective soccer moms, assh0le 'this public thoroughfare is near my mobile home' old people, and 'if the speed limits are slower, people will observe our beautiful sh1thole city' dumbass lawmakers.

Ya.. I'm bitter about speed limits.. I'm also bitter how cops target sports cars - when they're the cars that can usually handle the increase in speed.

Not a speed trap, but my favorite is the when the state police places "Drug Check Ahead" signs on I-95, just before a low traffic exit. Drug runners assume that the Drug check is a mile or more ahead since they can't see any blue lights or traffic being stopped, so they pull off onto the off ramp to avoid the Drug check. When they get to the end of the off ramp, the state and local police ( with helicopters at the ready) are waiting for them.

I've never seen it happen here in NJ. The most marked cars I have seen at once was 3, and all of the state troopers were outside of their cars beating a guy they had pulled out from the car they stopped.

I agree with some of the above posters. Radar Detector FTW.

Wrong. It means we need harsher consequences.

BTW: Wonder what the black mustang is for.

actually it means the speed limit needs to be abolished and the licensing system needs to be improved.

not anymore. The Colorado State Patrol is using a new radar gun that transmits on a different freq than X,K,KA and laser.

how do I know, because i have seen them running radar and my detector didnt go off. and last month i got popped by a trooper hiding in a corn field with his lights off.

i have googled it and i think the new band is KU.

Go take a course in Transport. Teaches you the basics of highway design; to sum it up, speed limit is based on safety for average driver reaction times and sight distance. Maybe some of you are above average, but don't forget those below that pull that average down. Go check the news, $50 says someone just died due to speeding, so keep flooring it...

Seen a similar thing in Raleigh... 1 squad car behind a fairly large bush with a radar gun and 10-12 motorcycle cops 200 yards up the road

This is the first time I've seen a speed trap like this. I wonder how long the cops were out there giving tickets....

They call them "Wolf Packs". See it a lot in FL with the State Troopers. Sneaky buggers.
They do it in Georgia too.

Typically write you up for 24 mph than you were really doing too.

Your arguments are not compelling given that the German autobahns are statistically safer than US freeways.

here here to that! I've never gotten a ticket, but come damn close (I love that section of 35E though that has almost no entrance ramps and no shoulders! Speeders DREAM!).

Oh, do tell. See bolded. That's exactly what the Germans have done. You're more likely to get a ticket there for tailgating or improper lane discipline than you would to get one here in the US for speeding.

speed limit is based on the geometry of the road and average driver reaction time

Actually, all the papers I've read say that the suggested speed limit (that is, what the engineers who designed the road think is ideal for safety and traffic flow) tends to be the 85th percentile speed. Incidentally, that speed tends to be 5-8MPH over the posted speed limit on most roads.

What are you smoking? Can I have some? They could raise the speed limit 100 MPH and people would still speed.

No, studies show that the 85th percentile tends to be a good indication of what's reasonable and safe. In some cases, that speed was UNDER the limit, indicating the limit should be lowered.

If the limit was 100MPH, the majority of people wouldn't go over 90.

The roads must be safe at the limited speed during night too

And how about when it rains, snows, gets foggy etc? Posted speed limits are understood to be during good visibility conditions. Cops can and will pull you over for going the limit if visibility is bad.

depends how aggressive a cop wants to get, they'll just follow you until they see that a shoulder is available, and put their flashers on. if you don't pull over, they'll turn their siren on, and then you'd call it a speed chase if you don't wanna stop for the cop. yeah it's stupid, but it could be considered a speed chase even if you're doing 30 MPH. over time, they'll spike your tires or shoot your wheels out, to name a "few."

even if you do speed like crazy on 35, if radical suburbans who hate Midway racers spot any sign of speeding, they'll phone you in, and then before you know it,
"yellow hatchback doing 90 on 35W." -call their friends to report the same sh!t even if their not on the road, perhaps at home watching some stupid soap operas. if the county recieves a few, they will not hesitate to put a cop on your tail. well, you know how the system works, so just keep an eye on that.

some highways have cameras. to this day, advanced technology can detect which cars pass red lights and cops can issue tickets without even being at the scene, they'll just knock on your door and give it to you right there. the cameras on highways are dumb, but the city must put them there for a reason, detect speeding or not, not sure but I don't really care.

however, I've seen cops pull over cars without an open shoulder, the car had to pull over to the far-right and stop in the middle of the furthest right lane. I was like... WTF, that's messed up, I drove by going around 75 on a 60, the other cars were going like freakin' 85-90, like a 4 pack. Cop sped in at like a hundred on my left, I was like, thank hell it wasn't me...

One time going through Maple Grove a freakin' cop was waiting on the otherside of the highway, scanned me at 81 on a 70, I tried to blend in with the other cars, but I mean, he wouldn't let me get away! just issued me the ticket in 5 minutes before I got back on the highway. bloody highway patrols!

everytime I get pulled over, I get so p!ssed off. dude, even during rush hour cops still pull cars over, I'm like WTF~ the highway is about to get backed up as hell, and then you see cars getting pulled over, that sucks, okay?
