Good thing they are doing that instead of protecting us from real criminals.

This proves its all about the money.

I'm pretty sure there are more tham 7 cops in that town.
There are plenty left to catch the "real criminals."

Just so we're clear, speeding is a crime, right?

heh. Actually, there were 7 cops waiting, 3 with people pulled over, and the cop with the radar gun.

Sure...so lets throw them in jail and give them the death penalty....

If you looked in the law books, you would find many crimes that you are probably guilty of right now. Should you be in jail?

There is no need for jail time, a ticket and high insurance rate will do.

Well it tends to be the only road in Melbourne you can speed on. Most of the other roads (192, Wickham Rd., Eau Gallie Blvd., Sarno Rd., Malabar Rd.) are so laden with traffic in the 8am to 6pm time frames it would be impossible to speed even if you wanted to. How badly they are clogged depends on if there is an accident anywhere on the road, if it is a school day, or if it is snowbird time of year.

I always get a chuckle seeing a cop car on the side with a radar gun when it is bumper to bumper.

Here in Virginia they use the congested periods to harass people for nonsense like county stickers and inspection stickers. Of course them screwing with people in traffic only serves to make the traffic even worse but they are "serving and protecting" by making sure those stickers are current. When I lived in Florida it was pretty easy to speed since it was so flat the cops had limited places to hide. One of the favorites was on the far side of exits since they normally had a small rise for them to hide behind.

This is the first time I've seen a speed trap like this. I wonder how long the cops were out there giving tickets....

Let me guess - this was at US 192?

They've stuck empty cop cars on 95 for MONTHS trying to get people to slow down. Nothing works better like a dude on an overpass with a radar gun calling in positions to 5 patrol cars in waiting.

Seriously, they cops have nothing better to do down here.

eidt: fsck i'm a moron. this is what I get for posting half asleep.

All I stated was that there were still plenty of other cops out catching the "real criminals."
And, the ones that were participating in the speed trap were still doing the job they should be doing.

Traffic cops don't usually investigate arson, rape, murder, ect...

I'll be the first one to admit that I speed all the time, but that is some really stupid logic.

well technically he has a point. if a good majority are going faster than the speed limit then they could possibly get it changed.

He's making some assumptions though. ;) If the speed limit should be set at the speed that 85% of drivers are below, then 15% will still be speeding. There were 3 people pulled over, which is a small percentage of the cars that will be driving on a highway during rush hour.

speed limit is based on the geometry of the road and average driver reaction time

The roads must be safe at the limited speed during night too

I've seen three cars - one un-marked car with the radar, and one in each direction at some distance, stopping the cars that speeded
However, usually here people flash their lights when there are cops around... Based on the way cars run bumper to bumper when going by radar cars, THE POLICEMEN ARE THE BIGGEST THREAT TO A GOOD FLOW OF TRAFFIC
(there are bigger threats to traffic, but every cop car slows the flow like there's no tomorrow :( )

They do that out here (Hyd, India) whenever the government feels like making a little extra money.
The police are given orders to generate a certain minimum amount of revenue (in fines). They have daily targets and stuff like that.

Saw this once, on an overpass on the way up to my Grandparents house in Ogden. Similar setup, one guy clocking people on the overpass, bunch of coppers on the on-ramp ready to roll. It worked because every time I went pass that over pass I slowed way down...

In Hawai`i, where I live now, it's not really possible to do this. Cops just hang out under overpasses on the interstate/highways...

How about cop go and stop the "crime" before it starts by making themself present at places where crime oftenly happen? Instead of catching good ppl driving to work on a nice beautiful day. Normal regular day cop shouldn't do any investigation, but they have the power to stop rape/murder before it could happen.

Thats nothing! Try driving through Waldo, FL (just north of Gainesville)... Known as one of the worst speed traps in the country.

Who's to say that the cop won't pull over a car with a woman tied up in the trunk? Wouldn't that stop a rape/murder before it happens?

You still are working under the assumtion that these speed traps are taking officers away from fighting "real crimes." Really, these officers were hired to do exactly what they are doing, and the revenue they generate pays for many many other officers who do investigate greater crimes.

I don't feel sorry for people who get speeding tickets. The limit is posted, you choose the speed you travel.
I know if I get one, it'll be my own damn fault.

That's a common speed trap in my neck of the woods. Typically, a motorcycle cop will park on top of an overpass with a radar/laser gun with a line of cruisers on the onramp waiting to hand out the roadside tax collection notices.
Portland area residents on the west side should take special care: I-5 southbound @ Carmen Dr., I-5 either direction @ I-205, I-5 northbound @ Terwilliger, US-26 westbound @ Sylvan, US-26 either direction @ North Plains.

I was driving on I-5 in Seattle once at 2 AM. I saw a little Honda Civic blow past me with a cop literally 10 feet off of the back bumper. Both were doing at least 90. All of the cars around me sped up to see what would happen with the Honda. All of the sudden 4-5 cops came out of nowhere from behind us and pulled everyone over. Luckily, I was not one of the ones that got pulled over. I have never seen anything like it before or since.

wow. that is a new low!

We have speed traps with officers that will literally run in the middle of the highway and force you to pull over or run them over.

How often do U hear an officer pulled some1 speeding and found a woman tied up?

I hear every single day of a bad neighborhood in Washington DC that ppl get shot and die (even during the day). Why aren't police patrolling these kind of neighborhood more?

Revenue they generate? It seem they generate more revenue for the insurance then for the state. I don't mine if those $ are for a good cause but insurance is not.
