reicherb,
please excuse my ignorance but, i thought that i am connecting to the vpn through the vpn client?
or i am pretty confident that that is what i seem to be doing. can you elaborate? maybe point me
to a walkthrough online?

When you're at school, browse the network and create shortcuts to whatever servers you think you're going to use. When you get home you still won't be able to "browse" the network, but those shortcuts will work 'cause that vpn client changes your wins and dns settings. If this computer isn't a laptop and you don't have that luxury, another way around it is to use the command line to get to certain servers.

Once connected, click on start and then run and type in the server name in the following format.

\\servername1

\\servername2

The VPN is providing a tunnel to the network bit it won't specifically give you access to network resources. You then need to login to the network like you would at school. If it's a NetWare network you would need to install and launch the Novell Client. If it's a windows network you would need to set the Domain, WINS etc and login to the network.
