First time cooking crabs

the dog knew better, he didnt stand a chance against a crab
best he could probably hope for was a few pinches to the nose till he managed to bite off the arms, then he could gnaw on some shell for a bit

Always dump them directly into the pot.

My daughter when she was 3 used to take a couple and have crab races on the kitchen floor before cooking time.

I would bring home a basket of crabs (pulled out of the river at the base) every other day on the way home from work.

Wouldn't it be easier to use tongs?

I've always picked them up by their back fins. They positively cannot pinch when held there. The problem is actually getting them by the back fin - the most aggressive ones (always males - hmmm that's familiar! 😛 ) tend to jump around and need to be controlled with a foot.

Their pinch hurts too. Never again will I walk on a pier where people are crabbing with sandals. A five incher grabbed my little toe and I remember saying obscenities that even surprised the watermen. :Q
